Reid to McCain: Don't Come Back to Capitol September 24, 2008 5:14 PM

A Democrat tells ABC News that, in a phone call late this afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that it would NOT be helpful for him to come back to Washington, D.C., to work on the Wall Street bailout bill.

McCain this afternoon suspended his campaign and said he would skip the first presidential debate in order to return to Capitol Hill to work on the log-jammed Bush administration legislation, which, as of Wednesday afternoon, was in peril.

McCain had phoned Reid to ask about the prospects of him, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and others to sit down and work together on hammering out a bipartisan proposal.

"Sorry," Reid said to him, a Democrat close to Reid says.

Reid then read McCain the statement he had just put out: "This is a critical time for our country," says the Reid statement. "While I appreciate that both candidates have signaled their willingness to help, Congress and the administration have a process in place to reach a solution to this unprecedented financial crisis. I understand that the candidates are putting together a joint statement at Sen. Obama’s suggestion. But it would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation’s economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op. If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is now.”

A source close to Reid said McCain didn't have much to say after that. Reid, the source says, thinks McCain's maneuver is a gimmick born from bad poll numbers and the fact that "debate prep must not be going very well."

UPDATE: McCain senior adviser Mark Salter emails: "Yesterday, Harry Reid said that consensus couldn't be achieved without John McCain's leadership. John stepped up and is providing that leadership. Now Senator Reid seems to have changed his mind for reasons we'll let him explain. But what he should understand is that this isn't about Harry Reid or John McCain or Barack Obama. It's about the American people and, in the words of Warren Buffet, the financial Pearl Harbor they're facing. John's committed to doing his part to help avert that calamity. We hope Senator Reid is too."

Reid working for hussein.

The two had almost word-for-word the same responses to McCain's proposal. Hmm...

This all falls on the liberal democratic congress, they all knew it, they stood by and profited from it, they protected it at every turn, they block every means to correct it.
There is one word that comes to mind TREASON!
They stole tax payer monies from the American taxpayer for thier own pockets. These low lives my friends are criminals that you elected to represent you! I hope to God when this is over we will search these criminals out and bring them all to justice.

The republicans remained in D.C. during the summer break and brought us a dem cave on the oil drilling ban.

If the dems want to rush home to campaign they do so at their own peril.

Reid and his cronies caused this problem. It is time to throw them out. We really need a 527 on this issue. We need this issue to go on even though McCain has suspended his campaign ads.

Obama, if he went back to Washington, would just vote “present” any way.

McCain to Reid:

The Presidential nominee of a political party is the leader of that political party

On behalf of the Republican party I intend to return to Washington to meet with the Cabinet and confer with other key advisors to reach a solution to this urgent economic crisis. I still offer this as a bipartisan working group which should not leave the Capitol until the American people’s best interests have been secured

Where the freak is the Republican leadership in this thing. McCain should be getting support from McConnell or somebody. Why is McCain being hung out by his own party?

Find a quorum of back boned Republicans and you'll have McCain's support.

As for Reid, he can KMA for all I care. Reid's best way to help this nation would be for him to cease breathing good air and ferment in some bleak desert back home in NV. Reid is a waste of "human" flesh.

Why every single congressman isn't in DC actually doing the job we pay them to do is a slap in the face to every taxpayer and a flip of the bird to every American. If they can't be at their desk doing their jobs, they can quit and let some full wit take over.

Send Sarah Palin to the debate Friday night.

They want to say she's not prepared to step up to President should the need arise.  I believe she would do just fine, especially in an open debate format.

Time for a 'Hail Mary' in this campaign, so let's watch as Sarah mops the floor with BHO!

Anyone in the McCain/Palin camp listening?  :-)

Leaders aren’t “invited” to lead. They just do it. Obama says “call me if you need me”, expecting someone else to lead. Yes, John. Go back and lead.

Overall, I think McCain is doing this for the right reasons.

There are only up sides to this for McCain and only down sides for dems and Onada. Onada’s smarty pants reply that he can multitask is juvenile at best. Oh, and is Pelosi still doing her book tour. Gotta love the dems.

If the debate occurs as scheduled, McCain can have a field day on this with Obama. Hard to argue that McCain is not putting country first.

Wasn’t it last week that Reid got in front of a TV camera and announced to one and all that no one—I assume that includes him—knows what to do [about Wall Street and mortgage lending debacle]? Yes siree, McCain should have a lot fun with Onada and dem Congressional “leadership”.

They talk a good game my friend but they don't walk their talk!

The point is not McCain doing what he says he'll do, it's the "Bi-partisan" approach which is an illusion. I'm telling you, unless he says this is the conservative way we are going to do this and you dems need to hop on board, he will end up taking himself right out.

The entire “leadership” of the democrat party has defaulted on making a decision and left it to the Republicans and BY NAME, to John McCain

However is McCain supposed to MAKE this decision on behalf of his party and the American people, while in a state of constant travel and bookings.....if not back in Washington DC becoming rapidly and fully informed on all the issues and able to interact with the Cabinet, President, and all the advisors?

This is a 9-11 for our economic system. If you really think a staged political debate on foreign policy supersedes this responsibility, then you don't need many good reasons to just go ahead and vote for Zerobama

I suppose if Zerobama was faced with a national crisis of epic proportion, he could just “multitask”- spend 3 days googling up a response and text message it back to Congress

If I have learned anything in my 58 years it is to trust your gut instincts, and I know that McCain has learned that lesson as well.

When history records the events of this week it will show that McCain went where he KNEW he needed to be. The cosponsor of S.190 in 2005 HAS a vested interest in this. Doing the exact opposite of what Dingy Harry wants him to do is further proof.

The RATs are trying to pull a fast one to cover there butts and come out smelling like a rose....damn I’m P!$$&D off.

Harry Reid translated:

"I CAN'T STAND JOHN MCCAIN!"

Harry Reid translated again:

"I'M TOO MUCH OF A PANSY TO DEAL WITH JOHN MCCAIN!"

McCain should be hammering the fact about how he TRIED to get an overhaul of Fannie/Freddie long ago and Frank and Dodd didn’t listen.
There was a report about it on Britt Hume’s show tonight and it was EXCELLENT! It outlined the timeline and the warnings about Fannie/Freddie and all of the warnings came from REPUBLICANS!
