Clinton seems to be going out of his way to help McCain. That is understandable on the theory that 2012 would be Hillary’s last shot at the Presidency and she won’t be able to take it with an incumbent Black democrat in the White House.

The bad news for McCain is that other than himself Clinton never gets anyone elected who he is trying to help.

Not only that, the Clintons lose all political clout after the er, black wing of the Democratic Party takes over.

He is a voice that substantiates the Democrat's contribution to the Fannie and Freddie debacle though and one that can't be ignored thus it is a net positive for McCain. Especially as Clinton said what he said in a thoughtful, presidential fashion.

If nothing else Clinton is a reminder of bipartisanship and not petty and partisan as Obambi has been acting all along (He even looked strained on September 11th on their joint visit to ground zero.). This has to show through if in no other way than in strong contrast. Obambi=partisan, petty, self focus, teenager, pouty kid. McCain=bipartisan, country first, right now and right then, leader

“The bad news for McCain is that other than himself Clinton never gets anyone elected who he is trying to help.”

That's because he doesn't have the entire democrat base, but he has enough of that base to make a huge difference to McCain if those votes are added to the usual Republican voters and the swing voters that McCain/Palin have been attracting.
