President Bush and Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain pleaded with GOP members of the House to end their party rebellion and quickly approve a Wall Street bailout plan.

We have no way of knowing whether this is true or not.
Palin turned me. McCain turned me off.
The dems control both houses, they have the votes. So why don’t they go ahead and pass it?
The title doesn’t even match the first sentence in the article. ABC NEWS alert! ABC getting close to DEBKA status.
Considering the source, the Anti-American Broadcasting Channel, I’d take it with a grain of salt.
Jake Tapper is usually accurate.
McLame is back!
McCain said he wasn’t happy with the current bailout. Who you gonna believe McCain or ABC?
I wait for better news
Lindsey Graham said on Greta he wasn't on board ( I think a better source)
That is why Sarah Palin has more integrity than all the three other nitwits combined.
Keep calling folks. We're in a war. If this passes we will have about one week before the credit markets seize begin seizing up again - and it will be much worse than now.
I don’t believe he would support the bill as it was.
And you think you’re not being herded by the same network which produced the Charlie-Tuna Gibson obscenity? Come on, surely you’re not this weak minded to be herded by ABC.
I don’t think this is true at all.
He has never showed support for this bill as it stands. I think he’s pushing for a compromise...a hybrid of Paulson and House GOP ideas...which I feel is probably what will happen.
If this is true Mccain just lost my vote screw the socialist bastard.
What an ass.
If this is true McCain just lost my vote screw the socialist bastard.
While tanking this bill might be better for the country, the lack of stability that would ensue over the next month would virtually guarantee an Obama Presidency. This bill must pass for everything to calm down and for McCain to win. Obama has capitalized on the instability over the last week to gain an advantage in the polls. The passage of this bill will stop the Obama surge.
Now Obama media is just plain lying. Don’t they read the news?
Now we know why Reid didn’t want McCain there.
BREAKING NEWS: Paulson and Obama - Friday,
September 26, 2008 @ 9:49:47 AM
When Sen. Barack Obama was given the floor to speak during White House negotiations, according to White House aides, he did so raising concerns about a House Republican alternative to the Paulson/Bernanke $700 billion bailout. But those concerns weren’t necessarily his, as he was not aware of the GOP plan before reviewing notes provided him by Paulson loyalists in Treasury prior to entering the meeting.
According to an Obama campaign source, the notes were passed to Obama via senior aides traveling with him, who had been emailed the document via a current Goldman Sachs employee and Wall Street fundraiser for the Obama campaign. “It was made clear that the memo was from friends’ and was reliable,” says the campaign source.
The memo allowed Obama and his fellow Democrats to box in Republican attendees and essentially took what President Bush had billed as a negotiating meeting off the rails.
“Paulson and his team have not acted in good faith for this President or the administration for which they serve,” says a House Republican leader who was not present at the White House meeting, but who instead is part of the team hammering out the House GOP alternative. “We keep hearing about how Secretary Paulson is working with Democrats on this or that, yet he never seems to consider working with the party that essentially hired him. Perhaps he’s auditioning for a Democratic administration job. Our proposal didn’t just spring forth fully formed; we’ve been working on this for several days, and Treasury staff has known about it.”

This story is utter rubbish. McCain does not support Bush’s bailout, as the story implies. He supports “a plan” to avert a meltdown. That is not supporting “Bush’s bailout plan” as the story falsely implies. This is just as bogus as them claiming yesterday a deal had been reached — three separate times — each time the Republican saying it was absolutely false.
So, if this report is accurate, NOW Mr. McCain looks like a horse’s ass.
Doesn’t he know that consensus is NOT leadership but acquiescence?
Where did he development this unalterable compulsion to compromise?
My God, it’s frustrating.
don’t believe it, another MSM BS attempt
I suspect that will NOT be in the plan.
If true, getting that in itself was worth McCain's travelling to DC.
Whatever agreement is passed, it will contain some of the “Bush bailout” configurations. Hence, the MSM will still call the outcome a “Bush bailout” in order to make it look like the Dems had it right all along.
I am sensing that ABC is playing games to offend the Conservatives.
I don’t see anywhere in this story that McCain backs the Paulson plan.... in fact the last paragraph disputes the title of this thread. I move that this thread be retitled under its ORIGINAL title.
Mighty big difference between the title (misleading) and the text....
People should learn how to read...
I’ve been waiting all morning for a statement from McCain’s campaign that he supports the House Republicans. Let’s see if the campaign denies this ABC News report.
If McCain supports this bailout, I am back to voting Libertarian.
Why is that? It’s McCain who stopped the 700 Billion no questions asked blank cheque bail out. Obama Reid etc. were trying to ram it through with Bush.
Screw Bush you mean. The sooner he’s out of there the better.
It’s simple. If this is true, you can kiss a McCain presidency goodbye. There is no point pulling for the guy. He’ll have proved that he is just barely better than Obama.
And while Palin turned me, I’ll have to go back to my original position which was it will be easier to destroy and obstruct an Obama presidency than to suffer through a McCain one.
God help the USA
Where’s a statement to that effect from McCain? This isn’t what he has been saying. He doesn’t like the current bill.
How strange for Major to mention something like that. Looks like O's camp playing dangerous games.
It’s nice of the opposition (’rats, Senate RINOs and W) to think of the House Republicans, but they have no real need of them. Either listen to them and follow them, or go your own way and reap the consequences.
Look at the article. Its ABC news, folks. Of course they are going to spin it. I just saw the Senator from Virginia who said they are still working on it. It is going to be a compromise. The Senator said the dems can pass their bill anytime they want to. It is not going to be the free money for all bill that the dems wanted. But it won’t be the let them get out of their own mess bill that we want. It will be somewhere in between. FRiends, the alphabet news networks want to turn us against John McCain. Please don’t let them depress you.
TY xcamel for seeing the same as I.... this thread needs to be pulled or retitled under ORIGINAL title.
1. Cut the Paulsen money bailout by half of the current amount.
2. Enact most if not all of the Republicans bailout alternative.
McCain has a great opportunity to hear House Republicans and realize a “work-out” approach is more than American way than a “bail-out” approach.
I can only hope this is a lying attempt by ABC to link up Bush/McCain as four more years of the same.
If McCain sides with Obama and the Democrats after postponing his campaign, then its going to really threaten a case of losing the election and losing the country...rather than lose the election to save the country.
Check the final bill to see if it conforms with McCain's "five principles".
Pay special attention to the words in boldface!!
First, there must be greater accountability included in the bill. I have suggested a bipartisan board to provide oversight for the rescue.
Second, as a part of that oversight, there must be a path for taxpayers to recover the money that is put into this fund. One trillion dollars is an unprecedented sum. We are talking about ten thousand dollars per household, and that money cannot simply go into a black hole of bad debt with no means of recovering any of the funds.
Third, there must be complete transparency in the review of this legislation and in the implementation of any legislation. This cannot be cobbled together behind closed doors. The American people have the right to know which businesses will be helped, what that selection will be based on and how much that help will cost. All the details should all be made available online and elsewhere for open public scrutiny.
Fourth, no Wall Street executives should profit from taxpayer dollars. It is wrong to ask teachers and farmers and small business owners to fill the gas tanks of the helicopters of Wall Street tycoons. The senior leaders of any firm that is bailed out should not be making more than the highest paid government official.
Fifth and finally, it is completely unacceptable for any kind of earmarks to be included in this bill. It would be outrageous for legislators and lobbyists to pack this rescue plan with taxpayer money for favored companies. This simply cannot happen.
Do not watch! We will tell you want you need to know!
Makes it really interesting as to what McCain slaps 0bama with tonight.
CNN just reported that the negoiations have just now begun....with the rep for the House Republicans..Roy Blunt.
Nothing has been decided yet.
I have not seen or heard anything to support the article. In fact just the opposite. At this point in time I will have to call the article BS.
Besides being marginally more honest, I don't see much difference between the two.
