John Stossel: Barack Obama and white privilege
Union-Leader ^ | 9/27/2008 | John Stossel

Posted on 09/27/2008 8:06:47 AM PDT by markomalley

COMPLAINTS ABOUT racism still dominate media discussion of the disparity between black and white success. Comedian Chris Rock tells white audiences, "None of ya would change places with me! And I'm rich! That's how good it is to be white!"

I assumed that the success of Barack Obama, as well as thousands of other black Americans and dark-skinned immigrants -- many of whom thrive despite language problems -- demonstrates that America today is largely a colorblind meritocracy. But a white campus lecturer, Tim Wise, gets tremendous applause from students by saying things like, "[W]hite supremacy and privilege continue to skew opportunities hundreds of years after they were set in place" and in America, "meritocracy is as close to a lie as you can come." His message is in demand -- he is invited to more than 80 speaking engagements a year.

But black writer Shelby Steele argues that whites do blacks no favors wringing their hands about white privilege.

"I grew up in segregation," Steele told me. "So I really know what racism is. I went to segregated school. I bow to no one in my knowledge of racism, which is one of the reasons why I say white privilege is not a problem."

Steele claims, "the real problem is black irresponsibility. ... Racism is about 18th on a list of problems that black America faces."

No, I disagree. The REAL problem is coveting what others have. You don’t have to be black to have a bad case of CLASS ENVY and believing YOU are ENTITLED to what others worked for.

The REAL problem is COVETING what OTHERS have regardless of skin color. This problem is as old as the hills. I guess you could say it is reverse GREED. Those that don’t have it are GREEDY for what YOU have.

“Whiteness” is the new code word for capitalism. If they talk down capitalism, everyone recognizes them as marxists immediately. Marxists are forever trying to disguise their agenda, abandoning one name as soon as it becomes too well-known. “Progressive” is too well known. Now it’s all “whiteness theory” and attacking “meritocracy.” But it’s the same old song and dance, which is why any black capitalist is “not really black.”

"meritocracy is as close to a lie as you can come."

The battle-cry of the loser, or of a self-loathing privileged, wealthy college professor who feels so much guilt for his own relative success that he is willing to endorse punishing other successful people for their crimes of politically-incorrect achievement inequality (also known as a 'loser').

If I had a nickel for every time an unemployed or underemployed slacker uttered similar canards, I could bail out Goldman Sachs (yet more foes of meritocracy looking for a handout).

When Obama loses in November, it will be blamed on RACE. The radical left will see to that....it will not be because of what Obama is....a radical socialist who hates America, and everything about it....no, it will be because he is half black.

Frankly, I don’t care what whining the socialist left does, or what they say. They have nothing for America and are totally useless to the people of America. For them, it is all about power and control, and the rest be damned. That is why they are satisfied to put a candidate of the likes of Obama in front of the American people as a prospect for President.....they do not care about the American Republic, its people, its defense, its military, its economy, its energy independence, nothing.....but power.

“The fact is,” he adds, “we got a raw deal in America. We got a much better deal now. But we can’t access it unless we take ... responsibility for getting there ourselves.”

Part true and part not true. Who got the raw deal? Certainly those who were actually slaves in America. But here we come to the unmentionable: had it not been for slavery, there would be few if any black Americans. The fact that they are descendants of slaves in America has made them the most affluent blacks on earth. Otherwise, they’d most likely be part of some of the world’s dollar-a-day economies, with little or not hope for improvement, unless they were able to immigrant to America.

But the old traditional civil rights leaders will continue their dogged fight to maintain the victim status, and cash in however they can. But it’s past time whites stop wringing their hands over this because the problems still to be solved are overwhelmingly in the black community and culture, and not the result of any racism that still remains.

We won't recognize America...in 20 years, let alone 200.

Blacks are successful in athletics. So let’s use that as a figure of speech... and it might be more than just a metaphor.

To be successful in sports, one must have an opponent. If the players on offense meet the players on defense and just one player beats his opponent, that is success. If just one lineman can beat his opponent, it is a game changer.

Each player gets better by constantly being blocked in his objectives by his opponent. That is precisely how he gets better.

The same is true of economics. The businessman or employee who takes playing the against the opposition as an opportunity to improve his skills becomes a better economic player. The player who gives up and leaves the playing field never develops his skill.

Chris Rock (and many Black entertainers) have seen the real racism that does exist. But rather than leave the playing field they have used it to advance their careers, a form of jiujitsu. The same is true of many Black politicians. Racism does exist. They exploit it to their benefit.

The loser is the racist who doesn’t know jiujitsu.

These charges of racism are no more than a liberal power play. They want to use racism to get their candidate elected.

There are degrees of desire.

There is desire, just wanting something. It is a step above the basic instincts. It can be good or bad depending on what you desire.

There is jealousy, which is a desire for what another has. It ranges from mild to intense.

There is envy, which is a passionate and sometimes violent desire for what another has.

Then there is covetousness. When you covet what another has, you hate that person for what they have, and you hate God for giving to that person what you desire — to the point of being blind to all that God has already given you.

There is a reason why the Greek of the ten commandments is most accurately translated as “Do not covet your neighbor's wife.” While it has its literal application (not to covet your neighbor's wife), it also has its metaphorical meaning, which is not to desire anything that others have, because one form of desire LEADS to another by evil impulses and forces.

Black racism in this country is largely founded on class warfare, which USES covetousness as a tool to stir up hatred for others and blindness to what they have.

The race-baiters know what they are doing, and they are dancing with the devil by using this strategy.

People like Chris Rock who made their career on racism never tell you HOW it was they were discriminated against...because they weren’t! When they rarely do come up with an example, it usually has nothing to do with their race but their attitude.
