The personality is familiar to us all: the sweet old aunt, the loving grandfather or the generous widow down the street, each of them unfailingly kind toward friends and family but given to flights of shocking prejudice when the conversation turns toward ethnic groups to which they don't belong.
Often the response is a nervous laugh, a wan smile or a hasty effort to change the subject.
We assume that old people are the products of less-enlightened times; they're unlikely to change; and their comments, however ugly, are largely innocuous.
Now, though, in the midst of the nation's first presidential campaign between a black candidate and a white one, a convergence of new political and scientific research suggests that prejudice and stereotyping among elderly white Americans in particular may not be so innocuous after all.
Older white voters heavily favored Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton over Sen. Barack Obama during the Democratic primary season, and national polls indicate that group now leans toward Sen. John McCain, the Republican nominee, by 10 percentage points or more.

Liberals cling to their religious belief that widespread white racism is a major obstacle to black advancement.

Synopsis: Older whites are racist geezers but don't blame them - it's a mental illmness.
If there actually are medical reasons for the different voting patterns of mature voters and youthful voters it would more likely be the mental state of young voters after passing through the government indoctrination administered in the schools of today.
Young voters are taught that bigotry and predjudice in pursuit of their agenda is good, racism in the form of racial preferences is good, stereotyping anyone not like them or who doesn't agree with them is good, and fasely accusing those same people of bigotry, racism and predjudice is good.
I have never seen so many closed minds and such inability to think independently as I see among the younger people of today. It seems that the more years they spend in schools and colleges, the less able they are to form their own thoughts and judgements. Thank heaven that not all are like that or we would have no military and no future at all as a constitutional republic.
Older voters, white and black, went to school in an era when students were taught to make objective critical evaluations leading to informed judgements based on facts and values.
Older white voters display the ability to form their own independent judgements about whom they will vote for.
Black voters for the most part are voting as racists.
Many (most?) younger voters also plan on voting on the basis of race because they feel it is time to have a black president and to show old geezers that they aren't racists.
Young voters vote with little experience paying federal income taxes, as well as the entitlement payroll taxes. In addition, most are still sucking on the parental teat.
I think we should amend the Constitution such that in order to be eligible to vote in Federal elections, you will have spent 10 years working and paying federal income taxes. No non-taxpayers allowed, for sure.
The thing that’s scary about this garbage is this how the Soviets would often deal with dissidents - declare them mentally ill and lock them up in mental hospitals.
Typical old white people. I’m so glad blacks and Mexicans and Asians don’t suffer from prejudice like us white folks do.
Mostly we sit in our air-conditioned sweatered cold condos writing letters to the editors of unread papers railing against the petty injustices inflicted upon us by an uncaring “they” somewhere out there beyond our desert landscaped yards in Sun City.
And really we aren’t senile, you just should have visited us before our afternoon martini time. Then you would realize that it’s not senility but just rotten personality.
Now, you do like yours dry, don’t you?
Okay, let me break this down to see if my reading comprehension is good. Ten percent more of elderly whites favor McCain over Obama, therefore, they may be and probably are biased/prejudiced? Black voters favor Obama by eighty percentage points and that isn’t biased or prejudiced?
I think I understand what the article meant well enough. But, pardon me for wondering who really is prejudiced and biased in this election. I think I know who it is, if anyone, in fact, is. Hint: Not old white people. What a silly, illogical article.
The cover of the National Lampoon has become Democrat Party rhetoric. Priceless.
Maybe some of it is from first hand experience with violent crime in our cities. Some of these gangs, replete with ‘diversity” have long preyed on our older citizens..
This article is going to go over real well with the Chronicle’s demographic. Who do they think subscribes to their rag? It’s not the hip-hop generation. Senior citizens probably make up the bulk of their subscriber base. They wake up, amble out to get their newspaper, then sit and read it with their coffee. They clip the coupons, clip articles to send to their kids and grandkids. They buy classified ads when they want to sell something, they look up the TV listings and movie times, read the sports page, look for sales, AND they read the op/ed page. I hope the editors are ready for the $#!+ storm of letters they’re about to get.
from the article-
“And Obama’s election strategists may want to schedule more campaign stops at nursing homes.”
Not to worry, Mr Witt. The helpful SEIU aides in Geezerville will assist the impaired in casting their ballot.
Norw it’s a Chicago Tribune byline and Howard Witt the author/reporter is the is the Southwest Bureau Chief of the Chicago Tribune. The Chicago Tribune carried the article at: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-elderly-racism_wittsep24,0,5158304.story at the end of this article you’ll find his e-mail address. Be kind to someone with this level of mental acuity if write him. Be sure to let Sam Zell know what you think of the material that’s being written in his various papers.
2. Just because someone lies to pollsters because they are afraid of being called a racist if they don't support Obama, doesn't mean that their actual support of Obama is race based.
It is a myth that older voters overwhelmingly vote Dem. Look at 2000 and 2004. Bush got about half of the oldster vote.

Witt was also a finalist for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in the category of national reporting.
Witt's body of work, "Justice in Black and White," included stories ranging from his groundbreaking reports on the Jena 6 case in Louisiana, to articles about the inequities of the judicial system, environmental racism and the brutal beating of Billy Ray Johnson, a mentally retarded black man in Texas. Through them all, Witt uncovered evidence of the racial tension that continues to divide America.

"There's a barbershop in town where the barber refuses to cut black men's hair. He says that that would anger his white clients, because they don't want him using the same utensils on blacks as whites."
See where this could be going. If it is a “medical” condition then is it “fatal” or does it make the person “infectuous” to others, or are they simply useless and a problem to themselves with this “condition”. So...
maybe we should start thinking about “euthanasia”. Oh yea, and they can also pin this condition on McCain so that even if he isn’t prejudice right now, it is “obvious” he could get this “condition”. They just never stop. Not even for a minute. To the left absolutely EVERYTHING has a political angle: what you eat, what you wear, what you drive, what you do with your garbage and now your age as well.
Why, Howard. Ya blue eyed nazi, you. And from the Chicago Tribune, Obama’s home town. That is a pretty broad brush for painting. You race hustler.
mccain looks like he could be doing better and especially with jewish seniors. I know some who really hated Bush but are now for mccain.
they were supposed to be the base of the democrats along with blue collars and women.
People of my middle-age who never understood the logic (or lack thereof) behind racial prejudice and tried our best to raise our children to be color blind are still being told we are mean and racist. The heck with them. At this point in my life, some of my beliefs may seem to be prejudice. They are the opposite. Any opinions I have now are based on life experience and observation.
