NRA to Fight Obama Over Gun Rights Flip-Flops ($15 million in ads to help defeat Obama)

Predicting that Barack Obama “would be the most anti-gun president in American history,” the National Rifle Association has announced plans to spend $15 million to help defeat the Democratic presidential hopeful.

Obama has said he has “no intention of taking away folks’ guns” and that he believes strongly in the Second Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms. But his apparent support for strict handgun bans in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere worries gun advocacy groups such as the NRA.

Obama’s mixed messages on the issue surfaced in June, when he expressed qualified agreement with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Second Amendment rights belong not only to government-controlled militias but also to individual Americans.

“I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms,” Obama said of the ruling. “But I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view.”

The ruling, in the case of District of Columbia vs. Heller, struck down a restrictive gun control law in the nation’s capital. Four months before the court case, however, Obama expressed support for those restrictions on handgun ownership in the capital.

“You support the D.C. handgun ban, and you’ve said that it’s constitutional?” interviewer Leon Harris asked Obama during a Feb. 12 interview on ABC’s affiliate in Washington.

“Right, right,” replied the Illinois senator, nodding his head.

Yes.

I, personally, am scared to own a gun. I have an Old English Mastiff instead. But for the first time in my life I considered buying one when Obama won the primaries. I may join the NRA just to give my support. Thank God they're out there.

Obama voted against a bill that would have voided an ordinance banning handguns in an Illinois town (the Halle de Mar story). Was that a crime-ravaged community? (I think it was Wilmette, or something that started with a W.)

If this is not a crime-ravaged place, the NRA needs to do an ad that shows what a liar Bambi is. IMO he does not really believe that a person has the right to defend himself if a criminal breaks into his home.

While he would deny this right to others, he thinks it's perfectly appropriate for him to be surrounded by armed Secret Service at all times. If this is not the definition of an elitist, what is?

Hussein is a down-the-line leftist. And as such he will back any and every piece of legislation and regulation to restrict and ultimately ban firearms (all in the name of “sensible” firearm regulation). And you can bet your bottom dollar he will appoint judges who do not think the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.

I am one of those who think the NRA has issues with raising money for profit then letting importnant gun issues go without representation, so I cancelled my membership, BUUUUTTTT...because they have been very vocal this election cycle and running seriously hardcore ads, I rejoined. I will continue to do so as long as they act as they have been recently.

...personally, am scared to own a gun.

My wife used to feel the same way. But, after she received training (defensive handgun course or two), she began to challenge and change her deep seated fears which were probably the result of several decades of "popular" conditioning. The safe and effective use of firearms can be learned my most. Knowledge dispells magical thinking.

If you are concerned about having guns in the house, note that they can be easily secured to prevent unauthorized access by children and other adults. And, children can be taught proper conduct around guns and when they're old enough can go shooting with Mom and Dad.

Do join the NRA, not a perfect organization, but an important one which needs our input to keep it on the right track. If you do embark on the daunting prospect of gun ownership, be assured that there are many helpful gun owners out there. Take care.

A gun is a tool, learn how to use it and it's presence may save your life.

You should be afraid to be unarmed, the bad guys have guns.

Only reason I’m scared to own a firearm right now is because of NYC’s Communist firearms laws. I don’t want a pair of cops telling me I have to give up my shotgun or rifle, for whatever reason it may be. ‘Cause I won’t give it up.

Yep, and if he can lie so easily about this issue, what others might he lie about?

I am an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor, and have been for many years. I have also taught Hunter Education for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. Firearms are safe if they are PROPERLY HANDLED. AS an educated and trained person, you don’t have anything to fear. I suggest that you contact the local game and fish department in your area, and take a Hunter Education course. Feel free to FReep mail me if you have any questions.

Please do. The editorials in the American Rifleman are very informative on second amendment matters. They also ferret out the weasels. Pun intended. But they do.

Obama has said he has “no intention of taking away folks’ guns”

The logic here is not complicated at all. If 0bama is pro-gun, why does he oppose the NRA?
