1976 or 1980?

Posted on 09/29/2008 3:57:18 PM PDT by Illinois Rep

This election resembles to me 1976 and 1980. It reminds me of a wildly unpopular sitting president...a war that by and large was not popular and caused great harm to the sitting president. We have a president with record low approval ratings. We have an economy in the tank....so is it 1976 or 1980? If it is 1976 then Carter (Obama) comes in as the default candidate because the country just isn't able to stomach the incumbent. Carter comes in and does more harm than good. Economic times that were bad get MUCH worse....and he loses his re-election bid. If it is 1980 Reagan (Obama) as the challenger to the unpopular president wins in a landslide and considers himself to have a mandate on which to govern. Reagan cleans it up and easily wins re-election against a party that is pathetically weak and non-competitive.

I think this is much more like 1976...in that Obama likely will win this election as Carter did. But how will he lead? Will he have a mandate? And what would his mandate be? So far the most I've heard him say is "I couldn't agree more with Hillary/John than what she/he just said". The only thing about 1976 that I have a hard time grasping is who will be our Ronald Reagan in 2012? Our party is weaker than it was in 76....and without a conservative leader who's primary goal is the conservative movement we may well be facing the worst possible outcome....a Carter who gets re-elected because he becomes the re-elected default candidate (i.e. Bill Clinton V. Bob Dole).

McCain simply will not win if he's waffling around between conservatism and liberalism....both sides know the phoniness of that strategy. Did he nominate Sarah Palin only to please conservatives so he can continue to coddle people who have no intentions of voting for him? The answer isn't a "new strategy" the answer ALWAYS is conservatism. Who will ride the conservative wave? Will it be Palin? Can she survive the ridiculous onslaught from SNL, late night T.V. and Network news anchors who's intent is to destroy her? Can Romney be considered likable enough to win election? The answer lies in each county throughout America. America will get a quick history lesson if Obama wins the Presidency. Half of all voters don't remember much about the Carter administration..hell they only know him as a carpenter who's building houses for deadbeats. Obama will screw this country up so in 2012 there will be a huge opportunity to defeat him. Problem is who will do this? The country will choose him by default if there is no CONSERVATIVE alternative in 2012. The movement should start now...not November 5th.

Unfortunately, I’d have to say 1976.

I was just thinking about this, definately 1976. Nothing Jerry Ford did could remove his linkage to Nixon. In essence 76 was Carter vs Nixon, this election is Obama vs Bush.

I asked my folks about this the other day. They said the four years of Carter was really, really bad.

If the obamanination is much worse than Carter we are screwed.

The polls remind me of 1980. It was so close they couldn't call or Carter was ahead....Reagan wiped the floor with him. Lets see how often the Dims and their media Lackeys are right...

Gore was going to win...NOPE

Kerry was going to win....NOPE.

We were loosing in Iraq...NOPE.

The troop surge was a mistake....NOPE

The bailout plan was going to pass...NOPE

Yada, Yada, Yada....they are wrong about most everything.

Do you honestly think McCain inspires like Reagan?

I don’t see a 1980 here unless it’s a landslide against us. That is a very real possibility.

I never sensed any feelings of defeat in Reagan. He was confident, assured and positive. Things were really bad BUT he was the challenger to a very unpopular president. The situation is not the same.

I believe Rasamussen to be a fairly honest pollster....and it’s not looking good with his polling data. I also don’t sense optimism from McCain and his campaign. They seem lost and that is a terrible sign....it’s the feeling I got with Dole against Clinton.

The Carter years were horrible and yes, this election seems like 1976, only without the congressional-directed humiliation in Vietnam and a smarter Republican candidate (McCain rather than Ford), with a Vice Presidential candidate (Palin rather than Dole)who actaully has some appeal. However, the economy was in better shape back then and the press wasn’t quite as biased as they are now (no interest in Obama’s background in the slightest). All things considered, I expect we’ll see a tightening in the last two weeks, with Obama winning by about 2-3 points. Don’t count on him not beng able to govern — he will have congressional majorities and interest groups bursting at the seams for new social, racial and labor legislation. I assume he will take the mask off to reveal the far leftist he truly is right after inauguration and we will have a truly horrible four years of his presidency.

I was a kid during Carter, and I remember my parents struggling through the horrific economic times just to put food on the table. Inflation was the word of the day though I don't remember any gas lines where I lived.

I remember how my parents couldn't wait to vote for Reagan. Carter's name was always spoken with vehement disgust and hatred.

Obama should win. Because his four years will turn out just like Carters and he'll be a one term President.

We have an economy in the tank.

By what measure?

“McCain simply will not win if he’s waffling around between conservatism and liberalism....both sides know the phoniness of that strategy.”

There are definite similarities to 76. Ford was a weak Rino candidate who thought wearing “whip inflation now” buttons was an economic strategy. Plus, he pardoned Nixon, which didn’t help him at all, whether it was the right thing to do or not. The only difference I see is that Carter portrayed himself as a southern conservative with moderate social values. Obama is an extreme leftist who’s ideas reek of socialism. If McCain were a conservative, with a conservative voting record he would be a shoe in.

He isn’t....I’m asking which one is he? What state of the nation are we most like at this point in time? Are we more like 1976 or 1980? If it is 1976 we need a Reagan to take over the conservative movement like he did between 76 and 80. If it is more like 1980....then Obama likely wins re-election because we have no one to challenge him in 2012...much like Reagan had no real challenger in 1984 (Mondale)..people didn’t see Mondale as a viable choice. Reagan was unique in that he was an awesome candidate...the best leader of my lifetime and because of this NO candidate could really challenge him. Obama is NO REAGAN....don’t mistake my point. There is no Reagan alive today in either party....BUT Obama could be a default winner twice if we don’t have a true conservative leader 4 years from now.

I told my husband that we need to stock up of non perishable food because I don’t want to go hungry again. Had to do without during carters abomination against this country.

zerobam uh uh uh and his tax anything that moves ideas is going to take us to a place where even carters presidency would look good.

God help us all if that man gets in.

By what measure?

By the measure of public opinion which will be the only one that counts. We have yet to enter recession, yet the guy on the street will tell you we've been in one for years and now we are about to enter Great Depression II.

So you’re assuming Obama will win either way. I want Palin for President in 2012 after being VP for 4 years. No reason why the Americn people will vote in a Socialist con man unless we fail to expose him, and the NRA is advertising BIG TIME in key areas.

Obama can’t handle criticism. He will implode.

He’s shielded by the MSM....you can expose all you want...the exposing party becomes the debate...”The ultra conservative right-wing internet blog Free Republic says Obama has terrorist friends”....IF it gets that far. Journalism is dead and the public has no idea.

And why is it so hard to find dirt on this guy? There’s plenty out there. Why not swiftboat the guy? He has domestic terrorist friends. His political/economic mentor is a card carrying member of the Communist party of USA....his reverend is a disgusting racist, bigot, hate monger..

Why is there not national campaign using this stuff? Who cares if they get labeled racist....who the hell cares?
