WASHINGTON - She burst onto the American political scene as Sarah "The Barracuda" Palin, a confident, moose-hunting, hockey-mom governor whose razor-sharp attacks on Barack Obama, Washington insiders and the U.S. media "elite" helped revive John McCain's presidential campaign in early September.
But as she prepares for her vice-presidential debate Thursday against Senator Joe Biden, Palin is now fighting to dispel perceptions among some conservatives that she's quickly becoming a political liability for the Republican candidate.
McCain on Monday dispatched his two most senior aides - campaign manager Rick Davis and strategist Steve Schmidt - to his ranch in Sedona, Ariz., to begin three days of intense coaching with the Alaska governor ahead of her 90-minute showdown with Biden at Washington University in St. Louis.
The decision came amid widespread criticism in the media and - more distressing for McCain - mounting anxiety among Republicans over Palin's performance during an extended interview last week with CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

I’m not afraid.
Which “conservatives” are nervous about her?
the fake conservatives, you know the ones who pretend they are conservative around election time to shill for the Dems.
Romney supporters from NRO.
I think she is a better speaker than McCain or Biden. She’ll do fine on the issues.
Oh, Please.
The only “conservative” I’ve read that’s afraid is Kathleen Parker.
And I’ve seen the same lame article posted in here I don’t know how many times in the last week.
Sarah ain’t going away.
She’s on the ticket to stay, for better or worse, and in my heart of hearts, I believe FOR THE BETTTER!
Typically, the liberals are projecting their own fears onto those other themselves.
Well looks like the media has found something: A chopped and diced interview by Katie Couric and RINO’s posing as conservatives selling Palin out. I hope conservatives don’t get weak kneed on the first blow.
Or, this could be a McCain rope-a-dope and she’ll smash Biden in the debate.
We’ll see.
After the Biden debate they will cut her loose I hope.
QUIT blaming Romney supporters!
I supported Romney and am fully behind Sarah Palin.
All that kind of talk does is cause bad feelings with Republicans by Republicans at a time when we need to stick together.
McCain/Palin 2008!
This is just the talking point that MSM is using to attack Palin. She will be fine; and she will kick the livin' crap out of smirky Joe in the debate Thursday.
Look for Biden to have his phony smirk everytime Sarah's points hit home.
I stand by Sarah
After she hands Biden his hair plugs? This gal knows how to debate.
I am not afraid of her. The only reason they hate her is because she is one of those that we have really been waiting for!
hussein disinformation campaign, nothing more and nothing less
There, fixed it.
Obama raising fears with people who are informed.
Gov. Palin is the kind of God fearing, hard working, honest, and corruption fighting politician the USA has been looking for to be President ever since Teddy Roosevelt left the White House. It took me awhile to realize who it was Gov. Palin reminded me of, but that’s who. Gov. Palin could easily be the modern equivalent of Teddy Roosevelt, one of the best Presidents there ever was.
I’m much more afraid of McCain than I am of Palin. I actually like and respect Gov. Palin. I tolerate McCain.
