Obama steps into N.C. immigration debate

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama suggested this weekend that the children of illegal immigrants should have an opportunity to attend public community colleges -- thereby interjecting himself into a contentious North Carolina issue.

Obama said children who attended public schools should have the chance to continue to improve themselves rather than being consigned to the fringes of society.

"For us to deny them access to community college, even though they've never lived in Mexico, at least as far as they can tell ... is to deny that this is how we've always built this country up," Obama said in an interview over the weekend with WUNC during a campaign stop in Greensboro.

Not sure if this will hurt his election chances in NC or not but this is a wildly unpopular side of this issue for Obama to be on. If he gets elected this will be coming soon to a state where you live.

According to Civitas’ most recent DecisionMaker Poll, 68 percent of N.C. voters agree that illegal aliens shouldn’t be allowed to enroll in public universities and community colleges.

Forget the U.S.S.C. decision allowing ILLEGALS into K-12. What do the folks of N.C. think of this? Would they like that to stop?

"Everyone deserves a college education" is right up there with "Everyone deserves a home of their own".

Yeah, it's a nice idea. Yeah, it's something to strive for. No, it's not something that the government should try to make happen.

And this idea is worse because not everyone is suited for a college education.

Remember, "Happiness" is not a right even if "the pursuit of happiness" is.

On the other hand, allowing illegals to register for college would make it easier to round them up . . .

Look at the small print on most any college site and you'll see that they don't discriminate against legal status and in fact prefer illegals. Diversity, don’cha know.

“... as far as they can tell”? What in the heck is that supposed to mean? Is the brilliant Obamessiah telling us that the kids have no way of asking their parents where they were born? Look, I know their parents might not be able to speak English, but surely they can at least speak Spanish.

Yet another absurd gaffe the Hard Left mainstream media will make sure never sees the light of day.

What a freaking nimrod! My daughter was going to be charged out of state tuition even though she had lived in South Carolina, worked in South Carolina and paid taxes in South Carolina prior to enrolling in community college there merely because she had graduated from high school in Pennsylvania. We filled out the daunting pile of forms, turned them in, waited and waited for a decision and finally said "screw it" and brought her back to Pennsylvania to attend the local community college.

Of course, that's perfectly OK in BHO's world because she is a legal U.S. Citizen and should be subject to a different set of laws.

What irks me is that people keeps saying that the goal was to make it easier for people with zero or poor credit to have their own home.

The word “home” gets to me. Don’t people who live in apartments have a home? Where in the Constitution does it say that no one should ever be poor?

Even Jesus said that the poor would always be with us.

It’s not an easy problem to fix.

He just continues to give away money right and left. After all it’s not real money...just government money. And if there’s a problem we can always write a bailout to cover any shortages. The man doesn’t have a clue, or a thought other than getting elected.

She would have spotted the obvious Marxist ideology taught and would have raised her voice to the treason .... They can’t afford to have smart people in (their) college.

I never ceases to amaze me the number of ways liberals come up with to spend YOUR MONEY! For those who think they pay too much in taxes, where does the money come from? YOU!

Hussein hasn't even been elected yet and he is already stepping in and telling states what to do.

I do not post this idea lightly! It is time for a Constitutional Amendment that states “children born of persons who reside in this country illegally are not granted United States citizenship by birth in this country.”

All of the above is true, but do we really expect John McCain to make any hay out of it?

While protecting borders is a federal issue, many have done what they can to make NC less attractive to illegal immigration.

The owners of the Democratic Party franchise in North Carolina have been on the edge of caving on this issue, just as they have by maintaining a permanent deadlock on capital punishment. Only a backlash by voters prevents groups like Barry Obama's radical ACORN from prevailing.

While groups like ACORN, LaRaza and El Pueblo can and do intimidate the University system, banks, businesses and state government bureaucrats, voters have demonstrated an unwillingness to be intimidated.

Voters in North Carolina don’t apologize for resisting government sanction of criminal behavior, and it is useless to try to make them feel guilty.

Indeed, the voters of North Carolina are not easily provoked, but when are, they are then impossible to resist.

Wake county in NC where Raleigh is located was paying for primary schools over $6,000 per year/per child to educate illegals’ children 3 or 4 years ago— certainly higher today yet illegals pay no taxes here working for cash. Most of the people I know here oppose illegals. Those students mentioned in the article also likely got instate rates for being here illegally. I didn’t know that the President of the US had the right to spend state or county money, but I guess Obama sees that differently.
