Tainted Dairy Products Being Removed from Ethnic Markets
10/1/2008
The North Dakota Department of Health says it`s working to remove recalled products from the shelves of ethnic markets in the state.
Kenan Bullinger, director of the department`s food and lodging division, says Mr. Brown instant coffee and milk tea products, as well as White Rabbit Creamy Candies, have been found in ethnic markets in North Dakota.
The recalls are the result of Chinese milk suppliers adding melamine to watered-down milk supplied to food companies around the globe to boost its apparent protein content. The compromised dairy products are blamed for sickening thousands of children.

Doesn’t anyone with these companies that import this stuff read the newspaper?

One thing is obvious, they never test what they are distributing. Unless it’s broken glass or metal shards, they’ll put ANYTHING on the shelf.

I can’t believe that I am still running across people who never heard any more past the pet food scandal. They have no clue about what’s in our food chain.

While U.S. is blissfully unaware of the problem for the most part, news coming out of China is even more appalling.
Some more detail surfaced on Chinese Internet about how to produce fake-milk. Fertilizer, detergent, and manures were mentioned as a way to fake protein content. Since it was an anonymous post by somebody claiming to be an ex-employee of a dairy company in Beijing, there is some credibility problem.

If it's true, there's likely to be back up info coming out sometime. I'll watch for that.

Notice they don’t want to use the right vocabulary here.
“Poisoned” works much better than “compromised”; regardless of intent.

What is an “ethnic” market? It’s obviously a code word coined to obfuscate its real meaning.

Market frequented by a specific ethnic group. Chinese market, Indian market, Mexican market, Arabic market, and so forth.
In this case, I think they are referring to Asian market including Chinese

The questionable additives seem to be added to jack up measured protein levels. My guess it that the test for protein determines the percent of nitrogen in the product. If this is true, the apparent approach to increase the profit margin has been to meet the nitorgen spec with some cheap extender, since in most cases probably no other tests would be done.
To: Western Phil
You are correct. It is said that Kjeldahl method is used to determine the protein content, measuring nitrogen content.

Great, so the poison stuff made it to the US. These “ethnic” markets need the health department to tell them to take it off the shelves? They don’t know about this already and voluntarily pulled the products? Hasn’t this been in the news enough by now?

There are many who do not want to know the truth.
It is going to force folks to think of growing food and that takes away from their time in front of the tv.
