However, all the other internals I've seen suggest Obama cannot win: he's losing among suburbanites; he's getting only 70% of Dems vs. 90% GOP voting for Mccain; he's getting "only" 73% of blacks (down from 91% voting for Kerry).

I seriously question the "internals" you are quoting here. No way do 25-30% of DEMs vote for McCain, and definitely no way do only 73% of blacks vote for Obama.

Sorry, them's the numbers. It was the Harris poll last week. More? The poll out on OH (lost track of which) had McCain and Obama tied in Montgomery Co., OH. Kerry carried the county by 2%.

There is serious chicanery or incompetence involved in some of these polls. I don't know which ones.

I don't know about that. ~20% of Hillary voters have said they are supporting McCain, and there are large numbers of blue-collar and Southern Democrats who aren't going to be voting Obama. Party affiliation doesn't absolutely indicate voter preference. I spent several evenings in 2004 phone-banking Democrats in liberal Orange County, NC urging them to vote for Bush. I had more than a few positive responses.

Obama is widely viewed as "not authentically black" by many in the black community. Couple that with his extremely liberal positions (even more so than the average Dimocrat) on social issues, and I can see him depressing, rather than elevating, black turnout for the Dims.
