Having said that, I concur with the others here that Ifill had far too many eyes on her and a 'hugh' ethics issue to even give an appearance of favoritism. Any complaint about her would taint the election and give the GOP every right to bash her and the MSM all the more so.
No questions on immigration or abortion. Wonder why?
You noticed that too. My daughter said the same thing not long into the debate.
Ifill wasn't.
Nuff said.
What side of the coin gives one FIRST and LAST chance to speak?
Nope.
In the light of the failure of PBS and Ifill to
admit pre-existing financial entanglements, this shows a lot.
Ifill fair — Really???
Ifill got dirty quickly anouncing rules then breaking them herself on the very first question giving no followup time for it. She only enforced rules against Palin throughout.
At 12:55 Palin anounces she will answer Bidens attack at 13:39 Ifill cuts off Palin off. She in hurting Biden so Ifill breaks the rule completely cutting her of after only 45 seconds abruptly and nasty as any woman ever. Now lets move on here. Boy was Biden smiling as Ifill bslapped Palin.
Ifill then asked a really bad question acussing McCain of hurting the poor by taking their insurance away because employers will pay taxes on insurance, but employees get a $5,000 credit. While helping Biden by helping him play the class warfare card against McCain.
From 17:50 through 19:30 Biden drones on 100 seconds and is awarded first on next question. Why was he not cut off like Sarah? Need I ask.
Later on (32:30) Biden is doing very badly lamely defending his no coal in America statement, he goes on for 100 seconds whereupon Ifill tries to help him out with a new question of Sarah.
Sarah speaks for 70 seconds she is destroying Biden Ifill again cuts off Palin off (remember Biden just got 100 seconds) to help Biden for the next 55 seconds she helps Biden out of the hole jumping in with help as needed.
54:50 Palin is destroying Biden on the Iraq and Afganistan war. Ifill awards Biden a full 120 seconds. But it doesnt help much so Ifill tries to help Biden by correcting his mistakes in a question to Sarah who gets 45 seconds.
Ifill then gives Biden an extra question he drones on 100 seconds but is not cut off like Palin was (he is doing poor but OK).
At 69:10 Biden ask can I respond? Ifill answers very sweetly Please (break the rules again). Thankfully Sarah didnt give Ifill a chance to cut her off this time by speaking up loudly and quickly.
On the next question they joked a little. Ifill was somewhat fair for the last 20 minutes as Biden made no major mistakes, other than his normal lieing.
I would imaging that Biden most likely got a few more minutes total time than Sarah.
Great observation, especially the illegal immigration issue. Silence.
Only because our side got out the truth about her silly book. I saw Lawrence O'Donnell on "Morning Joe" say that she lost last night. If the liberals are pissed off with her, I'm happy. To me, she was what was depicted in the photo at the top of this thread - lame.
I really wish Sarah would have ribbed Joe: “Stand up, Gwen!”
This clown of a writer at the “LA Times” misses the point. Ifill a had conflict of interest where she stood to benefit financially more with one outcome of the presidential race than the other. And from all that’s been said, she even failed to tell the Debates Commission about her book planned for release on Inauguration Day.
If Ifill had any sense of professional ethics she’d have withdrawn, or would never have accepted the role as moderator. If she did fail to inform the Debates Commission, then that alone is deceitful and condemning.
And, no one can declare that she was or wasn’t fair. One of the most powerful weapons the media has is the decision of which stories to report and which to ignore, or which questions to ask and which to ignore, or which to follow up and which to let drop. No one can know what thought processes she used in making those decisions while planning her questions. That’s why the concept of conflict of interest exists, and why true professionals will recuse themselves from situations where they have such obvious conflicts of interests.
But the only conflict of interest many seem to recognize these days are the things that might keep them from doing what they want to do, or from getting what they want to have. The professional standard of conflict of interest is what conflicted with Ifill’s self-interest, and she chose to ignore that professional standard.
Ifell was awful. Her question about the 5 Sec of States defended Obummer’s position w/Ahmacrazyraghed was pathetic. Then she would always give Biden the last attack and not let Sarah rebut was obvious after a while. What a hack.
Pray for W, Palin/McCain and Our Troops
Ifill needs to be fired for this.
See my previous post.
On immigration it is because both McCain and Obama hold the same position. In a way that is good for Palin so she won’t have to go on record supporting amensty in order to support McCain. On abortion, I think Ifill did it on purpose because it would have forced Biden to support Obama and his own position on abortion and raised questions about the criticism Biden has received from the Catholic clergy and the fact that they won’t administer communion to this so-called devout Catholic.
I think Gwen did OK, but I think she gave Bodeen the questions before hand.
“...they think being liberal is a qualification of intelligence and objectivity.”
Well put! I plan on using that phrasing this weekend at a family reunion.
The reason Ifill seemed impartial was that she knew the gig was up. The word got out about the book. She had no choice but to be impartial to a fault because the disclosure.
The next 2 mods are Brokaw and Shiefer! Biassed? Nah.
It didn’t work.
See my earlier post 45 where I document serious lapses.
She cut off Palin three times none for time being over in each case Sarah spoke for less time than Biden just had. In each case Biden was in big trouble.
I didn’t document the times she saved Biden by changing subjects whenever Biden delivered a punch, only Biden. If Sarah delivered a punch the next question helped Biden defend himself.
This was blatant and bad.
Sarah was great though so many didn’t notice how horrible Ifill was.
I nearly came out of my seat when a couple times he was already nodding and wanting to jump in when the question was being asked. It was very obvious he knew the questions ahead of time.
