When my husband and I were dating he was living in Greensboro, NC and I was living in Chattanooga, TN. Asheville was a good midway point. Its a nice place for a weekend, but it seemed to be packed to the gills with liberals and people devoted to the oddest things.
Exactly, Asheville is a liberal island, but it is also the key to neutralizing WNC going for McCain/Palin.
The surrounding counties are run by blue dog/Southern Democrats, McCain/Palin should win them, but Asheville the population center could help to blunt their impact on winning NC.
