Minorities with disabilities suffer most Fri Oct 3, 2008 12:58pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - During 2004-2006, an estimated 20% of US adults, or 1 in 5 people, had some level of disability and these individuals -- particularly individuals from certain minority groups -- were much more likely to rate their health as fair or poor compared with persons without a disability.

Black, Hispanic and Native Americans with a disability reported fair or poor health at disproportionately higher rates than White and Asian Americans, health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday in the agency's weekly report on illness and death.

"Health care delivery has been slow to reduce disparities that would enable many persons with disabilities to achieve and maintain a good level of health," they wrote in the lead article in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The researchers analyzed racial and ethnic disparities in self-rated health status among adults with and without disabilities using data from the 2004-2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System -- a large telephone survey that monitors the prevalence of key health behaviors.

self-rated health status

Minorities whine the most and consider themselves to be victims.

Film at 11.

Maybe they rate their health as poor or fair not because it is but because they dwell in self pity.
My step mother is a full blooded Apache. She is insulin depended diabetic and she b!itches and moans about it all the time. If you were to ask her the conditions of her health she would say deaths door.
I have a friend who is white (whatever that means) who is also insulin diabetic, you would never know unless you were with her when she was giving herself a shot. She accepts it as part of life and pushes through. She would rate her health as pretty good.
Just wondering.

It really has more to do with SSI disability income. Since the ‘Welfare Reform’ under Bill Clinto made it hard to live off the gov’t, the people figured out a way around that. Have kids and get them and yourself delclared ‘disabled’ and presto, the gov’t money starts flowing again.

Just wondering.

You arent just wondering. You're thinking critically, unlike the braindead reporter.

As you suspect, this kind of self-report is close to worthless. Just because people say their health is poor doesnt mean it is.

I can remember a study years ago that provoked outrage ... a group of researchers asked AIDS patients if they had been offered the then-new breakthrough drugs. Minority patients were less likely than whites to report that they had been.

You can imagine the handwringing. Until a more level headed group of researchers examined the actual records. Turned out the minorities had in fact been offered the drugs as often as the non-minority patients but as a group did not report as accurately.

I don’t think it matters, but I am white and thanks to my own effort, I am well insured — bullet proof coverage for life, actually.

I started insulin injections about 2 weeks ago and thus far, it’s no big deal. I guess if I were to complain about anything, it would be that I now have to pay much more attention to my diet... and increase my exercise = more walks with my dog.

The days of eating as much as I want and when I want are over, but I will adjust and overcome. Surviving and living with this issue, as with many things in life, is mostly attitude. PMA (positive mental attitude) has help me live as long as I have...60 years young on Halloween. ;>)

Anyone should be allowed a “pity party” for a couple of weeks when bad things occur in their life, but then it’s time to slap yourself in the face with a cold towel and get back to living.

There are far too many folks that think they are alive just because they have a beating heart.... yet each day, they live for their heart to stop. In a life where death is the hunter, there is no time for self pity... there is only time to live as strong and as courageous as you possibly can. It will all be over soon enough....

Best wishes for your mom....

It’s the punchline to the old joke about various newspapers reporting the impending end of the world

NYT: “World Ends Tomorrow, Women And Minorities Hardest Hit”
