Gilmore come out strongly against the $700 billion plan, arguing in a concise way that it amounted to government run amok. Warner supported the bailout, saying it was needed to prevent economic turmoil. Warner tried to pin the need for Congressional intervention on lax oversight by the Bush administration and "greed" on Wall Street.
Warner noted that both Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama voted in the favor plan, prompting Gilmore to say at one point, "I'm not in this for John McCain, I am in this for the people on the other side of this camera."
For once, Warner's efforts to turn the contest into a referendum on Gilmore's record as governor was overshadowed by an issue of more immediate concern. The only thing anyone who watched the debate will probably remember tomorrow is the word "bailout."

I do genuinely wish Gilmore well. The race has gone nowhere since John Warner’s retirement. But who knows? Maybe, Gilmore can use clips from this debate in his TV ads.
Did you see the debate?
It is a longshot but if anything is going to cause movement it will be this debate. Jim Gilmore really took Warner down.
Also Warner made some critical revelations that for conservatives watching who were thinking of splitting their ticket for Warner should bring them to pause. Especially his comments about judges and card-check. Also the bailout.
Great! May the hate for this force-fed bailout fire up brightly the non-incumbents and the say-nay Congress critters. I want to see a charged up limited government movement take off again asap.
As yes, the man who coined the phrase "Rudy McRomney" rears his head again.
Sorry, Jim Gilmore will never understand it's comments like these that make people dislike him so much. He's generally right on the issues. But he's a jerk.
I'll vote for him, only because I want to vote against Warner. But I'll shed no tears at his loss.
That's certainly encouraging to hear. In a GOP-leaning state during a Presidential year, the Pubbie Gilmore needs folks to believe he's competitive. Hopefully this debate and the TV ads help that perception. Warner certainly still has a commanding lead, unfortunately, thanks to many crossover Repubs.
No, I didn’t.
