AP) Arrests of people entering the United States illegally along the busiest stretch for such crossings fell for the second year in a row, possibly reflecting economic conditions in both the U.S. and Mexico, a Border Patrol spokesman said Friday.
From October 2007 through August, agents in the 260-mile Tucson sector arrested just under 300,000 illegal immigrants. That's 16 percent fewer than the nearly 359,000 caught during the same period last year.
In the 125-mile Yuma sector, fewer than 8,000 illegal immigrants were captured in the same period - down from more than 37,000 last year, for a 78 percent decrease.
"There are a number of different elements for any change, including, of course, our right mix of man power, technology and infrastructure," Tucson sector spokesman Rob Daniels said.
National Guardsmen supplemented the Border Patrol until July. The now-completed two-year mission deployed as many as 6,000 Guardsmen along the entire southwestern border as the patrol launched a hiring program to double its number of agents.
The Guard's presence in a variety of roles allowed the Border Patrol "to be more of a deterrent," Daniels said. "The intent was to prevent the crossings, to prevent the deaths from occurring."
The number of illegal immigrants who died in Tucson sector deserts also dropped by 20 percent, from 193 to 154, from October 2007 through August.

Aren’t there fewer illegals coming in?
Why bother, they can’t get loans any more.
Saw An American Carol tonight. They had a funny joke about the Mexican laborers in Afghanistan. It was hilarious to me anyway. I was laughing so loud and long at that joke, I actually felt slightly like that person in the audience that everyone hears laughing and becomes their own showlol and that was in a room of conservatives (who also laughed.)
Yes. The dollar has probably sunk lower than the peso.
Report Details Illegal Immigration’s Impact

PHOENIX — The county attorney [Maricopa County, AZ] has released a new report outlining the state’s illegal immigration woes and the crime associated with those who are here illegally.
County Attorney Andrew Thomas said 9 percent of the states population is here illegally. The number believed to be around 619,000 people according to the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy.
Almost 22 percent of the felons sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court are illegal immigrants.
Thomas said almost 17 of the violent crime is linked to illegal immigrants at a cost to taxpayers of $59 million last year alone. More than 10 percent of the murders, 44 percent of forgery and fraud cases and 36 percent of kidnappings can be traced to illegal immigrants.
Eighteen percent of property crimes were committed by people in the county illegally. That accounts for another $24 million.
Additionally, the Federation for American Immigration Reform said incarcerating illegal immigrants cost $80 million in 2004. That has grown to approximately $114 million.

Most don’t know that Mexican laborers are extant everywhere due to their desperation. Really says a lot for Mexico, doesn’t it? If I were a Mexican I’d be seriously looking into alternatives rather than taking it up the behind. Now why do so many illegals insist on insulting America - their savior - by flaunting the flag of the country who kicked them out while refusing to learn our language? Is that not the definition of arrogance?
I guess all those mine fields helped.
Joking!
The construction market had collapsed and they are staying home where it is cheaper to live. They will swarm back when the building starts again.
I.C.E. has increased raids on employers in the last few years.
These raids have increased the number of illegals being forcibly returned. New illegals may not be in the states long enough to pay off the coyotes for their current trip.
Why cross if you are sent back with even more debt than before?
What ever the reason, I am glad less are making the trip.
Yes, fewer are coming in and border security had very little to do with it.
Of course, they have been put in jail for working.

Probably. The economy is bad and most of Mexico which wanted to come here is here already - muchas gracias Senior Bush.
