Kim Jong-il's Reappearance to Calm Things down

2008-10-04

If it is true that Kim Jong-il resurfaced after 51 days of absence to watch the soccer match of Kim Il-sung University as KCNA reported, this could have been an attempt to quiet down disaffected residents in Pyongyang, according to a high-ranking Chinese official who recently visited N. Korea and met Kim Young-nam, the Chairman of Standing Committee.

After his Pyongyang visit, he met Chinese businessmen in a city next to Sino-N. Korean border, in which he said that general mood in Pyongyang is the worst (he has seen,) according to a participant, who conveyed the news to RFA.

The official said N. Korean officials he met confirmed that even during massive famine (in mid-90's) food ration in Pyongyang went on, but this year it has stopped for a long time.

He believes Kim Jong-il and his top officials determined that Kim's prolonged (public) absence due to his health problem cannot go on. However, changing popular mood in Pyongyang could be a significant development with regard to N. Korean regime's future, the Chinese official emphasized, according to the person at the gathering.

In particular, the official said that Pyongyang residents have (mostly) high loyalty to the ruling party and the regime, and disenchantment among them would be a serious matter.

He said that N. Korean officials he met also took the development seriously, according to the ethnic Chinese (N. Korean) businessman. Upon hearing the news that Kim Jong-il attended the soccer match, the official told a group of ethnic Chinese N. Korean businessmen trading with N. Korea that mood of Pyongyang residents turning restive must have become quite a burden to Kim Jong-il and that is why he turned up at the soccer match after 51 days of absence, according to the businessman.

It seems that food situation is impacting Pyongyang more than the rest of the country. Not that Pyongyang get less food compared with the rest. Rather Pyongyang's food situation deteriorated quite a bit. In the rest of the country people figured out a way to get by and survive. Their situation is atrocious but has not gotten worse, comparatively speaking. Those who could not cope starved to death in millions back in mid-90’s.

Maybe Kim should read up on the French Revolution-what can happen when your major city has food supply disruptions.

In this case, the kicker would be that internal security apparatus is breaking down. The network of vast number of informants and agents spying on general population and one another.

If they are demoralized or apathetic, and more interested in pocketing bribes, Chia Head is done.

Assuming for a second he really did show up that means one of two things. Either his health is really bad or he has lost it even more and had himself locked away. I am actually leaning towards number 2. He has always been crazy. He may have really snapped now.

Do we have confirmation that he really appeared or is it propaganda?

The real proof is in the pudding to be eaten on Friday, i.e. Oct. 10, which is the founding anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party.

Right. This report on his attending the soccer match is just a stop-gap measure. In all likelihood, he may not have had shown up or his double did.

He has to show up this Friday. If he won't, things will become quite fluid to say the least.

The little clown they had as a stand in for little chia pet wasn’t even a good stand in double.

Well the tide appears to be running against Kim.

Any thoughts on the time frame? Does he die or get "retired due to health"

You are close enough to see what we cannot.

There is still a veil of fog on this matter. I think authorities do not share the real important information with us.

Judging from authorities' recent behavior, that is, their assertion that they knew Kim's deteriorating health problem since last year, after his health situation became public news in the days following Sept. 9, made me believe that Kim Jong-il's health is indeed bad.

In my opinion, physically speaking, he is barely getting around. Can't handle the normal workload, which had to be cut sharply. This is said to have been going on since last year, again, according to the revelation which came out recently. However, I am sure it had gotten worse after the recent episode.

If he cannot present himself in a respectable shape on Oct. 10, people could start to think really hard about their life after Kim.

And while they starved, kim was working on the latest weapons.

I think being shot, might be easier than starving.

They say we reap what we sow, and kim will have his harvest in a hell of his own making.
