Exclusive: Obama to hit McCain on Keating scandal
Politico ^

Posted on 10/05/2008 7:37:18 PM PDT by Chet 99

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

Pushing back against what it calls “guilt-by-association” tactics by McCain, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, that will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

The Obama campaign, including its surrogates appearing on radio and television, will argue that the deregulatory fervor that caused massive, cascading savings-and-loan collapses in the last ‘80s was pursued by McCain throughout his career, and helped cause the current credit crisis.

Easy, “I found nothing in my investigation which caused me to question Senator McCain’s integrity,’’ said Robert Bennett, the Washington lawyer who was special counsel to the ethics panel during what is called the Keating Five investigation.”

And I fully expect the “he left his first wife story” to rear it’s ugly head at any moment.

The thing about this is...McCain has answered for and appologized for Keating (and his transgressions against his first wife). And was not charged or convicted.

Barry has done neither to answer any allegations against him.

Very true, and even though Keating was found guilty, he never bombed the Pentagon OR the US Capital!’

If the O is looking for parallels, there is none.

“I believe Robert Bennett, a Washington lawyer and big dem, was the special prosecute for the Keating scandal. He has many times that John McCain should never have been included in the Keating 5. And...he’s said this repeatedly within the past year. (He’s also Bill Bennett’s brother).”

Yep. He is a really good guy from what I can tell.

He was also McCain’s attorney last year regarding the NYT’s BS story about McCain and the lobbyist AND one of Billy Jeff’s attorneys during Lewsinsky (hmmm...I wonder how Slick is “counseling” his former counselor to react to the coming attack on McCain),

Helms was in a very tight race for re-election. He was not expected to win even up to the evening of election day. He felt that letting McCain off the hook would open him to charges of cronyism. The Democrats on the committee needed his vote for political cover. They had committed to McCain that he would be released if Helms voted with them. Helms refused.

McCain calls the Keating scandal "my asterisk."

"The appearance of it was wrong," McCain said. "It's a wrong appearance when a group of senators appear in a meeting with a group of regulators because it conveys the impression of undue and improper influence. And it was the wrong thing to do."

These are McCain's words, not mine. And, it's not like I'm asking him to admit to anything that he hasn't already admitted to. I'm just suggesting he could turn an Obama attack, into his advantage.

When will McCain stop worrying about being called racist and take off the gloves?

“Who do they expect to watch a 13 minute video?”

LOL. That was my first thought. If it takes 13 minutes to describe the Keating 5 incident...no one is going to bother.

The problem is that the Keating Five scandal parallels the current Wall Street shenanigans far too closely for comfort.

Not as close to ACORN/Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac....

I see risk for both sides here, but probably more for Obama. McCain’s people almost certainly focused-grouped issues like Ayers, Rezko, and the Keating Five business with Independents and swing voters. The problem, as alway, will be the Obama firewall to complete, truthful information that is the MSM.

Once again we have a chance to damage O . Mac is doing what everyone has demanded . O threatens to reopen a 20 year old scandal that never went to trial and some here go wobbly. No wonder the left is winning , look how easy it is. We are talking about Ayers , the head of the weather underground who took credit for more than a dozen bombings on US soil . They robbed a brinks truck in upstate NY killed a cop and a guard. Keating 5 ! Get real ..

I was hoping that McCain would come out after the bail out and before this came up and use it as an entree to name names (Dodd/Franks/Obama) in connection with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac...

I hoped he would say that, having been a victim of accusations of which he was cleared in the Keating case, he was reluctant to go forward hastily, and wanted to wait until we were through with the sensitive negotions of the “rescue bill”...but now...and then lay out the connections. If he came out first it would be best.

That’s right. Most voters won’t see past the vague similarities between Keating and the current financial situation. McCain is vulnerable on this, warrented or not.

ROBERT BENNETT, DEFENSE ATTORNEY

And if there is one thing I am absolutely confident of, it is John McCain is an honest and honest man. I recommended to the Senate Ethics Committee that he be cut out of the case, that there was no evidence against him, and I think for the New York Times to dig this up just shows that Senator McCain’s public statement about this is correct. It’s a smear job. I’m sorry.

McCain better nut up and be prepared to fight it out.

The media has carried this one for Obama for too effing long.

and McCain can’t win just letting his woman do his fighting for him...though she is something else.

This is all worth it, hope he knows this. IF he loses because he ain’t got the stomach for blood anymore then he never deserved it anyhow and we get stuck with the crap of an Obama presidency from which we won’t recover in my lifetime.

There’s always the chance that a President Obama will over reach and set the left back by a generation.

Both McCain and John Glenn were held blameless. It was really the “Keating Three”, but the Dem Controlled Senate kept McCain and Glenn involved so it would be “bipartisan” scandal.

This is the truth here folks. One of the lead investigators said McCain should have been excluded but was not for political reasons.

I am sure the media will whip into another frenzy over it to protect 0.

Anyone want to admit there have been 5 times the headlines about library books and Palin than Ayers-0?
