LONDON, England (CNN) -- Taliban leaders are holding Saudi-brokered talks with the Afghan government to end the country's bloody conflict -- and are severing their ties with al Qaeda, sources close to the historic discussions have told CNN.
The militia, which has been intensifying its attacks on the U.S.-led coalition that toppled it from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, has been involved four days of talks hosted by Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, says the source.
The talks -- the first of their kind aimed at resolving the lengthy conflict in Afghanistan -- mark a significant move by the Saudi leadership to take a direct role in Afghanistan, hosting delegates who have until recently been their enemies.
They also mark a sidestepping of key "war on terror" ally Pakistan, frequently accused of not doing enough to tackle militants sheltering on its territory, which has previously been a conduit for talks between the Saudis and Afghanistan.
According to the source, fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar -- high on the U.S. military's most-wanted list -- was not present, but his representatives were keen to stress the reclusive cleric is no longer allied to al Qaeda.

I don’t believe a single word of this article that I read.
It appears to be an effort to show us poor fools we needn’t fight, but simply talk for peace.
I’m reminded of someone here...who is it?
Is Nic Robertson a credible source?
But, but, but.....we are losing in Afghanistan.
I’ve still got my eye out for Mullah Omar.
I thought the Taliban were kicking our butts?
However, these type negotiations usually result in some kind of inclusion in the govt which will be a mistake.
Alternatively, it describes a role for our Saudi ally in the effort to drive a wedge between the Taliban and Al Queda.
If King Abdullah is able to persuade the Taliban to formally sever ties with AQ it will be an important step. Al Queda is a negative force in the worldwide Islam and exists to destroy the Saudi government and gain control of Mecca.
You need a trademark notice on the “eye out for Mullah Omar” thing. A Freeper has been using that for years as his tagline and I think you owe him money. ;^)
lol, oh, that is bad. :-)
If it turns out to be true, we better never take custody of either terrorsit leader. We don’t need any ACLU socialist running cover for the scumbags any more.
I think the king is smarter than we think. We let the offshore ban expire, the world economy is starting to crash, the price and demand for OPEC is crashing, the US is going broke hunting down AQ and fighting the WOT in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brawrney Franks is spittn’ more than ever, etc., etc.....however, the king is still a mooselimb too....no telling what his real intentions are at this point.
I am convinced Barack Obama has been in a campaign to brainwash like a Cult leader young minds. You have to talk in small sentences and deprogram.
When ever you see an Obama supporter.
Just look in their eyes and say.
Are you okay? You know Obama is a dangerous man right?
If they say something back just keep shaking your head no, as they talk. Then walk away. do not say anything more
I am certain that I do owe him money, and I would gladly pay up. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the Freeper that coined it, so it troubles me every time I use it as I am unable to give credit where credit is due.
Dead? :-)
His name is “dead.”
I don’t know how much, if any, credence to give to this article but there have been rumblings of a Saudi brokered deal recently. This is the first time I have heard of a potential for turning over the AQ leadership.
