But isn’t this academic? O’s mother was an American citizen; doesn’t that make O a citizen, wherever he was born?

Sorry, I know it’s obvious, but I’ve never seen that part discussed.

If he was born overseas to an American parent and a non-American parent, I believe that he was entitled to be registered as a United States citizen, but he was not automatically a citizen. (In Mr. Obama's case, if he was indeed born overseas, I strongly suspect that no Consular Report of Birth Abroad was ever filed.)

For instance, back in the 1970s and 1980s, there was a tremendous outcry about children of American soldiers left in Vietnam. The U.S. government eventually created in 1987 a program so that those children could get a visa to come here called The Amerasian (or American) Homecoming Act, but they were not granted citizenship. Back in the early 2000s, there was some move to actually let them become citizens (see here, for instance), but I don't believe that it went anywhere. (Of course, once they had a permanent immigrant visa, they were also eligible to undergo naturalization like other folks, and I believe that many or most did so.)

Here are some links:

Children of the Dust

While I haven't personally been involved, I would be surprised if we don't have some Freepers who have been directly involved.

Its constitutional that he must be a natural born citizen and the us constitution has a rather detailed description of what that means.

Barry does not qualify.

Google up the constitution and read the definition of natural born as the founders wrote it.

Thats the point.
