There’s plenty of water in Texas for drinking — pure spring water locked away in limestone. The problem is that all those nice, green suburban lawns require water on an industrial scale. Get rid of the water-wasting lawns and there’s water enough for everyone.

That would help alot (believe me, I once had to deal with a Texas water permit!), but if you were to be come 100% self sustaining, much of the western side of the state is in trouble. Alot of the water table is brackish now because of over irrigation.
