Raleigh, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman who allegedly scammed a local support group for divorcees out of more than $6,000 has been arrested after a two-month search. To get money from the group Margaret Irene Haithcock, 51, of 655 Monogan St., allegedly made up stories about having cancer and her son dying in Iraq. The group held several events to raise money for her and held a memorial service for her son. According to the warrant issued for her arrest, Haithcock's actions "were intended to deceive the group into providing monetary donations for issues which were made up entirely." After months of investigating Haithcock's claims, Raleigh police issued the warrant in June. When Fayetteville police went to the home listed on the warrant in July, her ex-boyfriend said she was gone and had told him she was in a mental hospital. Haithcock was arrested Sept. 18 and has a court date scheduled for Thursday.

I know that the wonderful people at FreeRepublic have huge hearts and all I can say is that I’m so glad that not one single person I know on here was put in the situation where they opened their hearts to help a fellow Freeper only to find that it wasn’t true. I feel so guilty that I even asked.

My girlfriend drove her to the hospital.
She went in and apparently wandered around for a few hours or so to “get her chemo” and one of the others in the group drove her home a few hours later.
He’s alive and is living in western North Carolina. He showed up at his father’s funeral and his name showed up in the news article about the funeral, and that was how she was finally caught.

You tried to do a good thing; she did not.
You’ve probably learned a difficult lesson from this, but I would ask you to never lose the goodness in your heart. It a rare and true thing. There will always be bad people, so we need to hold on tight to all the good ones we can.
Yes, Morgana, you are correct. One of the hardest things we ever face in life is having our trust stomped upon. There is a very special place below for people such as that woman.

It’s hard not to lose the desire to help others when someone does something like that to you. She was a part of our group for over a year. I had cancer when I was 16, and so she used me to gain sympathy in the group.
