McCain wants to spend $300 billion more to buy up bad mortgages
michellemalkin.com ^ | 10/7/08 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 10/07/2008 9:04:34 PM PDT by jddqr

I can’t underscore enough what a rotten idea John McCain’s ACORN-like government mortgage buy-up is. I said it during my liveblog. And I’ll say it again: “HE WANTS TO EXPAND THE BAILOUT. He wants to do what ACORN wants to do. We’re Screwed ‘08.”

This was his supposed “game-changer.” This was the very first thing out of his mouth during the debate tonight — his big pitch right off the bat. The McCain campaign immediately sent out this fact sheet on the proposal, which will cost at least $300 billion. The proposal involves directing the Treasury Secretary to “purchase mortgages directly from homeowners and mortgage servicers.” That’s on top of the trillion-dollar crap sandwich, the $85 billion to AIG, the $25 billion to automakers, the $200 billion in capital and credit lines to Fannie and Freddie, and who knows what else we’ll be forking over to California, Massachusetts, etc., etc., etc.

He spent the entire debate assailing massive government spending — while his featured proposal of the night was to heap on more massive government spending to pursue home ownership/retention at all costs. If Obama had proposed this, the Right would be screaming bloody murder about this socialist grab.

Get over it! I don't care what McCain says. He can say whatever he wants, just so long as we keep NOBAMA out of the WH!
Mccain is treating the conservative base like the Democrats treat the far left. Mccain knows you have no where to go. He'll have Sarah give some conservative platitudes and scare you guys about Obama then he'll get in and be just as socialist as Barry. Just watch.

If "conservatives" are willing to elect socialists to protect them from a bigger socialist they deserve what they get.

Deamon - it’s easy - just ‘close your eyes’ - and you wont get poked. Also, if you have to ‘hold your nose’, do that too. Just stay focused and lets not let NOBAMA get in. Simple.

The 300 billion will come out of the 700 billion already passed, to the average joe out there this means something as the bailout is not just for the wall street.

Get a grip folks , quit being so negative.

Not very bad candidates. McCain will try to implement a federal government spending freeze. Also even this mortgage idea is more of a loan not a free house and it only applies to a narrow range of mortgages not house flippers or multimillion dollar machines. It is more like a student loans for homes which I think is a bad idea. The government interference in education I believe causes the cost of education to inflate. This idea is not a freebie, most mortgages will be repaid. I wouldn’t have suggested this but it is not as bad as anything that Obama is proposing.

Right, besides Romney said that he thinks this 300 Billion is already a part of the bailout bill.

I would rather spend money to help people re-finance their mortages so that they can make their payments instead of throwing money at Wall Street.

Kudos to you for quoting Ghostbusters. :)

In the meantime, I’m sorry, I can’t be a party to this insanity. It’s like compromising my values to achieve a small victory, and I can’t do that.

Thanks. I felt the same way. We all feel strongly but losing this election is not an option. Also McCain should have floated this idea before the debate.

Carly Fiorina showed why she was run out of HP after nearly destroying that company. How can you say “we need to help out these people who can’t afford their mortgages because the value of their houses has fallen?”

If the value of my house falls to half of what it was when I bought it, that has exactly zero effect on my ability to pay the mortgage. (Except that my taxes will go down.) It does affect the bank’s ability to recover their money if I default, and that is the core of the current financial crisis. Government buying the houses to keep poor credit risks in them does not change anything, and it will pervert markets and set very dangerous precedents and incentives - I would say worse than the ones we are reaping the fruits of now.

Yeah, a mental hospital. I think he’s crazier than an outhouse rat.

As for SP, she needs to decide if she is a real conservative or just takes orders from McCain. I fear she may be too much of a lightweight to stand up to the sharks in Washington, in spite of the pit bull image she likes to cultivate. Time will tell.

I don’t mind if the man is bi-partisan. That in and of itself is fine. But openly advocating socialist policies? As a REPUBLICAN?

My brain is still trying to parse this. It can’t. If my brain could blue-screen right now, it would.

No, not really. But what I don’t idolize is vacuum ivory towerism where 27 days before an election you are ramming the candidate closer to your views into the ground and not a breath of effort attacking Obama. This woman is like clockwork though. She’ll issue 2 anti-McCain articles for every anti-Obama piece. Hardly helps conservatism in my view. If Obama wins what’s the point?

Well, then you'd have to adjust the prices for everyone. Even if I can afford it, am I going to pay 400k for the same house you just had the value renegotiated down to 180K?

So, in ten years when I go to sell, the house I could afford, I can only sell it for 250k, I walk away owing the difference btw 400 and 250?? Is he frikking serious???

The home prices will fall another 10% regardless. This will just allow home owners gracious loans and preventing defaults should be a positive thing if care is taken which is where I depart. It certainly isn’t as bad as it sounded at first and it most certainly isn’t as bad as the ACORN giveaway. This if goes as planned most of the money should be repaid.

Why don’t we give out billions of dollars to companies who play by the rules and do good for our market?

youngsters here have no inkling what this place used to be like

it was ...well...conservative...surprise

folks took pride in being a bit paleo

or slightly libertarian

and then the NeoCons came and now here we are..

old quasi paleos like me are dinosaurs and we're forced to support and give money to a poorly campaigned uber moderate bi partisan whatever he is because Obama is so damned much worse

be honest, did you ever think our movement would get to here like this way back then?

“Also McCain should have floated this idea before the debate.”

God yes. For God’s sake, if you’re going to betray your party, do it in a press release. Don’t do it in a live telecast to tens of millions of people.

*facepalm*
