A bear’s nose is more sensitive than a bloodhound’s. Many 100s of times more sensitive than a humans. They can follow a carrion scent literally for miles and miles like a homing beacon. It’s thought that they “see” smells.
So a hit with pepper spray gives them a massive pain in the brain. Like a person getting a WW2 air raid searchlight straight in the eyes at midnight. BOOM, they forget abuot you as they roll around in agony. At least, that’s the theory.
