Bush signs Great Lakes pact into law

President Bush yesterday followed through on his pledge to sign the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact into law.

The legislation recognizes the eight Great Lakes states as a regional water compact for managing withdrawals from the world's largest source of fresh surface water.

Large-scale diversions or bulk exports of Great Lakes water will be forbidden without approval from a regional water council the states are expected to form.

Proposed by Great Lakes governors at the end of 2005, the compact previously was ratified by each of the states and both chambers of Congress.

A companion agreement in good faith was signed with Ontario and Qubec in 2005. That one was nonbinding because states are forbidden from negotiating treaties with foreign entities.

"Together, we have taken a major step to protect the Great Lakes," Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, the Council of Great Lakes Governors chairman, said of Mr. Bush's decision to sign the compact into law.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Mr. Bush's support "ensures that the Great Lakes will remain a protected national treasure for years to come."

I sure hope it included a Great Lakes’ Navigator, so the U.N. can sign off on it. Did it include a flood plain runoff plan? It better have...

Sounds good on it’s face but these things have a way of being used against us.

I suspect you could get side drilling past the states that surround them.

On the surface it sounds like a good thing. But since environmentalists are involved I’m sure the reality is far far different.

This water authority probably has control over anything on, in or under the water. There is a tremendous amount of shipping on those lakes.

This is a pretty straightforward proposition designed to prevent any one state from selling out to some bidder on building a huge water pipeline heading out to the southwest. The headline issue is draining Lake Superior to fill backyard swimming pools in Phoenix, but the horizon threat is the arid great plains, when the Ogallala Aquifer starts to play out and the American breadbasket begins to go stale.

They won’t put a meter on your well. They’ll put you on city water.

So far we locals still outnumber the libtard invaders trying to move in from Ann Arbor. They’ve already pushed gas lines, sewers, and water and been defeated.

I hope this means we are not obliged to divert the Great Lakes water to California and other water short areas....

Next step... CLOSE the St Laurance Seaway to ocean going vessels. PERIOD. Unload them on the seacoasts into container trains.

Enviros should support this. The open seaway has been a vector for all manor of nasty creatures coming into the Great Lakes.. Alewifes, mussels, lamprey, and more. Let's stop this.

If Obama plans to tell people what temp to keep their thermostat at then I’m sure he’ll find a way to control the other aspects.

Like forcing the remaining people living in rural areas to move to cities. To conserve resources and save the environment don’t ya know.

I suspect they would have to kill the majority of us before they could move us.

I respectfully submit it will create more, not less jobs. I am NOT an enviro wacko, but I love our lakes. I grew up on them and have seen the destruction. I do NOT mean no ships on the lakes. I mean no Ocean ships on the lakes.

Or... VERY tight inspection of the ocean ships before coming into our water ways. Now, they get away with dumping ballast water collected from anywhere in the world. Very much like peeing in your pool or worse... Tell me how you would like to handle this.. I am open..

I agree that we don’t need ships coming from the oceans into the lakes.

I don’t know who’s worse, the ocean-faring ships in the Great Lakes or the DNR.

Ships brought us zebra mussels and probably the *@(#& emerald ash borer. The DNR gave us autumn olives to increase bird habitat and now they’re classified as a noxious weed. We can’t get RID of the blasted olives!
