Photos of North Korea Leader Kim May Be Old: Media

Pictures of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il issued by the communist state may be several months old and possibly taken before his reported illness, South Korean media said on Monday, raising more questions about his health.

North Korea's state TV broadcast pictures of Kim on Saturday inspecting a women's military unit, as the reclusive country stepped up a campaign to show its "Dear Leader" was healthy after U.S. and South Korean intelligence officials said he may have suffered a stroke in August.

The photographs of Kim, wearing sunglasses and looking generally healthy as he talked outdoors with women soldiers, were the first in nearly two months.

But the surrounding greenery suggested the pictures may be from before his last public appearance in the middle of summer and not from recent weeks, when trees in the northern part of the Korean peninsula would have begun changing color, local media quoted government sources and experts as saying.

"There is little chance they were taken in October," the JoongAng Ilbo daily quoted Lee Eun-joo, a horticulture specialist at Seoul National University, as saying.

Nearly unanimous opinion of S. Koreans who saw his pictures featured on S. Korean TV or newspaper.

It was so obvious. Now we have a group of people speculating that N. Koreans can't be that stupid and this patently absurd move is some kind of coded message to interested parties outside N. Korea.

I don't know if it is true or not. I am more inclined to suspect that an order came down at the last minute to find Kim's photo and run them on media, for some reason. Media/propaganda folks had to look for photos not yet published from previous inspection tours, and in a state of hurry and panic, they found a bunch of photos without checking the problem with lush green in the background. But who know?

6 p.m. Pyongyang Radio broadcast tonight, a.m. radio picked up in Tokyo, ran the same story at the top of the hour, his visit to Unit 821. In an emotional voice, same re-hashed text. Then followed by martial music. That is what, the third straight day with just that story??

Weird.

Who is Bush and Condi dealing with then, if the fat one is dead, as he may well be?

Somebody is going to look mighty foolish over this in the next few months.

I guess the US will be getting ready to secure the 12 sites in the DPRK soon, eh? Will be interesting to see if the Japan SDF join them.

I spoke with a friend just returned from a years duty in South Korea. My friend says the belief in SK is that Lil Kim has gone to be with his daddy.

The US media are probably attending the same school as the North Korea’s propaganda services.

Never mind the greenry in the background, look at the gut in the foreground!

It would be rare to be incapacitaed for a couple months and maintain his type of gut.

It appears that Kim Jong-il has resurfaced just long enough to cast his absentee ballot for Obama. The fact that he is dead shouldn’t disqualify him from voting for the Dem candidate.

They’re probably still trying to find someone who is willing to take over the country.

Talk about a fixer-upper!
