Columnist Paul Krugman wins Nobel economics prize

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Paul Krugman, the Princeton University scholar and New York Times columnist, won the Nobel prize in economics Monday for his analysis of how economies of scale can affect trade patterns and the location of economic activity.

Krugman has been a harsh critic of the Bush administration and the Republican Party in The New York Times, where he writes a regular column and has a blog called "Conscience of a Liberal."

He has come out forcefully against John McCain during the economic meltdown, saying the Republican candidate is "more frightening now than he was a few weeks ago" and earlier that the GOP has become "the party of stupid."

"Krugman is not only a scientist but also an opinion maker," economics prize committee member Tore Ellingsen said. He added that Krugman's analyses tend to back free trade and his research gives no "support for protectionism."

This man is a total hack..one of the worst of the worst. The Nobel Prize continues to be the biggest joke. Gore, Krugman, Arafat. Give me a break.

Proving once for all (as if there had been any doubt) that winners of the Nobel Economics Prize are smoking weed with Willie on a continuing basis.

Did Stalin or Hitler ever get a Nobel Prize, or am I thinking merely of Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” award?

I never even realized that the Economic world even took him seriously. Just goes to show how far Bush hatred gets you.

Obviously, there were no smart economists on the list this year. So... they chose a Democratic Party hack instead. The Left is in hyper mode this election.

The economics community has barely heard of this guy. He’s a lefty journalist!

He hates Bush.

That is enough.

This is like giving a sports journalist the Heisman.

I guess if the sport's journalist hated Bush enough, he'd deserve it.

They missed giving the prize to Karl Marx, so they’re making it up with Krugman.

Al Gore received one last year too, which pretty much tells you that the Nobel bar has been lowered to Lilliputian levels. Political correctness long ago replaced scholarship and innovation as the intellectual gold standard.

Every year it must get more difficult for them to top the previous year for shocking and outrageous stupidity.

Whatever tiny sliver of credibility and prestige the Nobel Prize still had left
has just been utterly and completely destroyed forever. Paul Krugman, a
demonstrably dishonest bug-eyed fool, won the Economics prize.

What a bunch of dumbasses. The elites have a bunch of sweet tasting but bad for you cottoncandy swirling around in their brains, and they call it deep thinking.

hah! Exactly.

I heard this news item on the radio just a few minutes before seeing this post. I have to say that I laughed out loud. It vividly displays the intellectual void that is the Nobel committee these days.

The Peace Price became meaningless after they awarded it to Arafat.

Clearly the dementia suffered by the Nobel Peace Prize committee members has spread to other areas of the organization.

Hate to rain on the mirth, but Paul Krugman as an economist is an excellent economist. The problem is that he sold his soul to be a journalist for the NY Times. As a editorialist, he is a hack. As an economist, however, he is first rate.

Nonsense. His most idiotic screeds are related to how the birth of George W. Bush has resulted in a massive depression. If there is a bit of economic sense left in that carcass, the fanatical, Bush hating, emotion driven part keeps it well under wraps. Check out his take on the current troubles. All Bush and lack or regulation. Moronic ranting of a seventh grader, not a first rate economist.

Nonsense.

No, pay attention to his actual economic work, not his columns. As an economist he is first rate. His work on international trade, for which he won the award, is very influentially in the field of international economics.

His political columns are not the same level, but that is irrelevant.

You are going on his newspaper columns, which are idiotic enough. The Nobel Prize Committee evaluates what he has published in peer reviewed journals, which is very different. If you want to accuse Krugman of being schizophrenic, fine. Paul Krugman the populist columnist may be a nut case. Paul Krugman the professional economist is first rate, however.

What a joke!!

The Nobel in Economics joins the peace and literature prizes as the most corrupt and politicized awards!!!

What a shame! - Where does one get recognition for pure excellence nowdays?
