Jumping Ship on McCain
RealClearPolitics ^ | 10/13/08 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/13/2008 12:23:38 PM PDT by Obadiah

On CNN last evening both David Gergen and Ed Rollins echoed the current mantra that the "old" noble McCain is gone-and a "new" nastier one has emerged, largely because of his attacks on Ayers, perhaps his planned future ads on Wright, and a few unhinged people shouting at his campaign stops.

Recently Christopher Buckley endorsed Obama, likewise lamenting the loss of the old noble McCain. New York Times columnist David Brooks dubbed Palin a "cancer," and he suggested that Obama's instant recall of Niehbuhr sent a tingle up his leg as Obama once did to Chris Matthews as well.

A couple of thoughts: the George Bush, Sr. / Willie Horton campaign was far tougher; so were the Bush 2000/2004 efforts. If anything, McCain's campaign is subdued in comparison to what we've seen on both sides in past years. Indeed, McCain as a vicious campaigner is a complete fabrication, but, again, a brilliant subterfuge on the part of Team Obama that, in fact, has run, via appendages, the far more vicious race.

Obama and his surrogates have repeatedly engaged in racial politics (as Bill Clinton lamented when in fury he denounced the "race card"). When there was never evidence that McCain was using race as a wedge issue, it was clear Obama most surely was--preemptively, on at least two occasions--warning Americans he would soon be the victim of opposition racial stereotyping.

His surrogates like Biden and those in the Senate continue to link legitimate worries about Obama's past with racism. Second, for about 3 months all we've heard are references to McCain's age, with adjectives and phrases like confused, can't remember any more, disturbed, lost his bearings, etc.

McCain has fired his slackers and now going to toss off the “Mr Nice Guy” so more of the conservative writing Clymers can jump ship which suits me just fine!

I like Mr. Tough Guy Maverick and detest wimps.

Where is George Will, Bill Kristol, Ed Rollins, David Frum, et. al.? Why are they not calling this stuff out while they share Starbucks coffee on the set?

I think most of them have already decided Obama will win, though Kristol may still be supporting a McCain win.

Both Gergen & Rollins are on CNN’s payroll. Gergen fancys himself as a Georgetown / Harvard elite. Rollins likes to be invited to Washington cocktail parties.

Endorsements have consequences my friends. I for one will not forget or forgive those who jumped ship when the seas got a little rough.

I have heard very little about the Perot endorsement.

This is part of the allure of McCain Palin getting in there. I may be proven to be a sucker, but I actually believe they will turn Washington Upside down and get the BS overspending under control. I am envisioning a six month Federal Government shutdown over budget and tax disputes.

On the other hand, with the zero in there, I am envisioning Al Sharpton as Treasury Secretary and Jackie Chiles as Attorney General handing out reparations checks. And I’m sure Kwame Kilpatrick will be in the admin somewhere after he procures the day 1 pardon.

I have a long long memory and do not forget "conservatives" who back or seem to aid the enemy. Rollins, Gergen, Parker, Buckley, Kmiec.

Because they know when the anti christ, um, I mean Obama, is in power, they need to save their own skin and sell out their morals to do so.

Just as it has been proven throughout history, time and time again, the traitors and cowards are always easier to see when the battle gets serious.

They run to the other side, carrying a white flag, and screaming their condemnation for those of whence they came.

Surrender Monkeys, cowards, turncoats, traitors all, are lining up at the top... of the lowest amongst us. May their disgusting heads be the first to fall when the sward of justice crosses their throats, figuratively of course.

I know, I can be melodramatic, to a fault... it’s a mood thing. ;>)

Nah, McCain just needs to get himself a bevy of terrorist and other disreputable ‘friends’

... It’s about ‘street creds,’ don’t you know!

David Gergen??? David Brooks??? et al

I have never known either one to be true conservatives.

Brooks wrote for conservatives, because some conservative rags gave him a job. But, as soon as he jumped to the New York Slimes, after the 2000 elections, you could see, in his own writing, that his “conservatism” was never principled to begin with.

Gergen has always been a moderate, not a conservative. He’s not a liberal ideologue, but neither is or was he a principled based conservative either. When he backed a “conservative” position, it was because it worked better - actually achieved some desired result better - like his moderate thinking, it was more practical, pragmatic in his view.

Ed Rollins was a GOP aligned manager of political campaigns. He promoted what he believed worked in a political selling-point sense. I think if he had been hired as often by Democrats he would today just as easily be called a liberal. He’s neither. He’s a pure salesman and a pure salesman is always a whore - making the sale is all that counts. If he’s mad at McCain it’s not that McCain has lost the confidence of “conservatives”, it’s that McCain is not whoring his campaign rhetoric to line it up with so-called “conservatives” who were never on the “conservative” ship to begin with.
