WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain made his first campaign stop in North Carolina in several months.
McCain held a town hall-style event Monday at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington. McCain spoke to the crowd for 20 minutes.
The 2,000 free tickets to the event were gone within 45 minutes Saturday at New Hanover County GOP headquarters.
McCain asked his supporters to "fight for a new direction for our country." His speech appealed to both the future of the country and the future of his campaign as he told the crowd, "Don't give up. Be strong. Have courage and fight."
McCain last appeared before North Carolina voters in May at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. He last visited the state in June, when he met privately with evangelist Billy Graham.
The visit comes after Democratic candidate Barack Obama spent several days in western North Carolina preparing for last week's debate with McCain.
McCain's wife, Cindy, was at Lowe's Motor Speedway outside Charlotte on Saturday as honorary race director.
Pssssst
I was in Asheville 3 weekends ago and noticed a lot of big houses in the affluent section that had Obama signs outside. I wonder why Asheville would support Obama since if he taxes the income of those who can afford vacations that Asheville won’t be able to have as many tourists as before. Some people are so stoopid.
San Francisco has a little sister living on the eastern side of the country. Her name is Asheville.
Does anyone have a crowd estimate from Raliegh today?
I saw the live stream but they didn’t pan around any.
Hank Jr. did a good job and Sarah was her usual knockout self.
Yep, Asheville is the land of the mountain hippies. Half the nutty liberal bloggers from NC are in that town.
I believe you mean Richmond, VA. The thread in Breaking says the crowd was 30,000+.
Stayed there one night and couldn’t wait to get outta’ town. What a bunch of hippie libs!
Aheville is also home to all the New Age frootloops who could find a home in Chapel Hill.
I also want to know about the size of Sarah’s crowd in Richmond today. Any Freepers hear anything?
Did hear that Wilmington had a full house for McCain’s event and that Larry Sinclair was there. Larry said he got to shake McCain and Cindy’s hand and that many folks in line were supportive of him in his quest to get the truth out about Obama.

Asheville has always had a granola/hippy element.
Local TV station did not give McCain visit good press coverage but then it is an NBC affiliate so I don’t know why I expected anything any different.
Because it’s hippieville?
