WASHINGTON — A growing al Qaida -backed insurgency, combined with the Pakistani army's reluctance to launch an all-out crackdown, political infighting and energy and food shortages are plunging America's key ally in the war on terror deeper into turmoil and violence, says a soon-to-be completed U.S. intelligence assessment.

A U.S. official who participated in drafting the top secret National Intelligence Estimate said it portrays the situation in Pakistan as "very bad." Another official called the draft "very bleak," and said it describes Pakistan as being "on the edge."

Not a problem.

As soon as The One takes office, we're gonna invade Pock-e-stawn. That'll fix it. Besides who cares about all of that stuff, anyway - I want free health care!

Obammy will push them right over that edge, too.

I have been beating this drum for a few weeks now:
When empires collapse, their colonies weaken and the enemies begin chipping away. Rome and England lost their colonies as they lost the ability to keep them.

We don’t have colonies per-se, but we have pseudo-colonies - countries we protect and have very favorable trading relationships with. I expect them to experience shooting wars and this could actually lead to a “shooting war” on US soil.

Part of this comes from a realization that our enemies are also getting desperate in the global meltdown. Desperate countries can take desperate measures. I think of things like North Korea attacking SK, China and Taiwan, Russia in Georgia, and now we have issues in Pakistan. India? It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Maybe obama could go over there and talk with them.

Pakistan is nearing civil war. The new civilian government will not be able to govern the county, or control the army and the security services.

Many in the army and security services are now quietly allied with the jihadists, and they will only become bolder as the army as an institution begins to fragment. There will be a growing attempt to “talibanize” Pakistan.

Other Pakistanis will resist, and India, quietly, will assist them. It won't be long before these two sides will be at each others throats.

Frankly, I'm worried that the Pakistan government will be controlled by the Taliban, just as they did in Afghanistan after the former Soviet Union went home.

If that happens, it won't be just a bunch of tribes feuding among themselves. Pakistan is a nuclear power, and I seriously doubt they will be using it just against India.

Yes and stopping the nukes in Iran becomes a moot point.

Think of it this way: Not only is the US the global economic engine of the world economy, but it is also the engine of world security. What happens to the US happens to the rest of the world.
