DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's biggest bookmaker Paddy Power said Thursday it would pay out early more than 1 million euros (782,776) on bets that Barack Obama will be the next U.S. president, three weeks ahead of the election.

The Dublin-based bookmaker said it made the "unprecedented decision" to pay on bets taken so far, following Wednesday's final campaign debate between Obama and his Republican rival John McCain, which polls judged the Democrat to have won.

The bookie was sure the Marxist would win and now after the debate, he’s very scared he’ll be paying off those bets with steep odds when McCain wins!!!!!

...which polls judged the Democrat to have won.

The same way that Gore "won" the debates of 2000...after each of which Bush got a bump in the polls for who people would vote for?

When you ask somebody who they thought "won" the debate, they don't always tell you who they were really more persuaded toward supporting. They are really separate issues, and it is the second one that counts. I'm pretty sure that McCain won in the latter way.

Maybe there’s some tax benefit to paying out on loser bets in this way? Our maybe he wants to take a loss so the percentage he has to pay the Don will be smaller?

There must be some rational business reason to do this more than once.

They also paid out ahead of time for a new England Superbowl XLII victory.

I'm not kidding - they really did.

I take this as a good sign.
