Barack Obama's lead failing to reassure Democrats
Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | October 16, 2008 | Anne Applebaum

It's all over bar the voting, if you believe some of yesterday morning's headlines. Despite all of the prepping and practising, the rehearsing of grins and grimaces, the third and final US presidential debate – the last chance either candidate had to dramatically alter the course of the campaign – offered no huge advantage to either side. John McCain did well, but not well enough. Barack Obama was a little flat and passionless, but it was his debate to lose and he didn't lose it.

For the most part, the two candidates in fact sounded like two reasonable people who have agreed to disagree. But however much of a landmark that high level of civilized discourse may be in American political history, it also leaves us exactly where we were at the beginning of the week: Barack Obama is ahead. In some polls, he is way ahead, by 10 percentage points, or even 14. Boosted by an economic crash which voters blame on the Republicans – and which McCain has floundered trying to solve – Obama's position has only been buoyed, in recent days, by the shrill rhetoric of McCain's vice-presidential nominee. For once, nastiness isn't working in this election, or at least not yet: When Sarah Palin described Obama as a man who has been "palling around with terrorists", McCain actually dropped in the polls even further.

But if these polls are reliable, then Obama isn't merely going to win, he's going to win by a landslide. Not only will he be president, but the Democrats will sweep the Republicans out of Congress as well. Indeed if these polls are truly reliable, there's really no more point in watching or writing about the presidential campaign at all: We should all change subjects, and start talking about things like "Obama's

And yet – If it's all over bar the voting, then why is no one acting like it's over? More to the point, why are Democrats so nervous?

Sarah Palin. They are afraid of huge turnout from Joe and Josephine the Plumber energised by Sarah the Salmon Fisherwoman.

Beginning today to see more of these “we’re scared” things form liberals. Even Senator Government saying similar stuff today.

According to them, Gore and Kerry would win with a landslide too.

Obama and Dewey baby!

60 years from now some kid playing Grand Theft Auto XXIII will look up from the holograph wall long enough to say to his dad, “Back in the olden days, what was an Obama?”

LOL

I'm convinced the Bradley effect is real, and it is growing. Here's why:

Back in January, Obama's primary appeal was primarily to white young people. Most blacks didn't even support Obama in the beginning. As the campaign progressed, it became increasingly racialized, first in the primary with Hllary and now in the general. Increasingly, there are people suggesting that a vote for McCain is somehow racist.

People are extremely sensitive to this. I live in a racially mixed neighborhood and I absolutely LOVE my neighbors of all colors. I am also a passionate conservative Republican. So when it came time to get out the bumper stickers and signs, I got the bumper stickers, but didn't put up the signs. This in spite of the fact that I have frequently been to the "Victory Center" to work for McCain. I can't beleive I'm this intimidated! Actually, the signs DID go up just this morning, finally.

But it is not at all hard for me to imagine that there are significant numbers of voters out there who on the phone will notbe honest will pollsters because they somehow worry, that somebody on the phone line might think ill of them. I am certain such people DO exist, and the more "racist" crap we hear, whether from John Lewis or trumped-up Palin rally "hate," the greater the effect becomes. It would not surprise me at all to find that 5-10% of McCain voters are affected by this.

The Democrats are nervous because even they can see the media bias and don’t believe the mainstream media.

"Indeed if these polls are truly reliable....."

"FOUND IT!" The operative word that voids their whole argument.

I am sure there are plenty of sane thinking democrats out there that would rather not part with their hard earned money for the Chosen One.

When, I wonder, is the last time in history any poll correctly or incorrectly, predicted a Republican victory for President?

What lead??

The polls are within the margin of error especially when factoring the “race” effect where people who don’t want to be called racists lie to pollsters.

McCain is in the cat bird seat and will win, I bet he turns that racist state of PA Red.

-- Vote for obama and spread your wealth! --

Maybe it would be better if the country had separate tax rates. One for the patriot Democrats, who want to pay more, and a separate one for the small-government Republicans. That would be fair, because each person could pick the tax scheme they prefer. If the government doesn't have enough revenue, just raise taxes on the "good to spread the wealth" Democrats.
