CONCORD, North Carolina (CNN) John McCain stepped up his rhetoric against Barack Obama on taxes in his weekly radio address, comparing his plan to socialist programs that would convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth.
The remarks were part of a theme McCain has used since the final presidential debate that criticizes Obamas philosophy, but his most recent comments were the first time he directly invoked the word 'socialist.'
His running mate, Sarah Palin, has used the word in speeches the last two days as well.
In the pre-taped radio address, McCain said, At least in Europe, the socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives. They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Senator Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut it's just another government giveaway.
McCain did not repeat the wording in his appearance at a rally in Concord, North Carolina Saturday morning, where the latest CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows the two candidates tied at 49 percent.

They need a commercial that uses the S-word.
Is that calling a spade a spade? ;)
Outside of Michael Moore’s Cuban Utopia (sarc/off), has anyone ever seen a Socialist country where they would want to live permanently? The standard of living must be LOWERED before everyone can be “equal” in a Socialist country.
They should also point out that Obama is more liberal than the self-admitted socialist Bernie Sanders..
The Truth Squad will be along shortly to beat you brutally about the head and shoulders.
Slimeball? Snake-in-the-grass? Subversive? Shark?
/sarc - too.
"Obama is a socialist, meaning that he wants to take money from you and redistribute to somebody else somewhere else. That is socialism. Socialists like to call it 'spreading the wealth', and that is exactly what Obama did talking to a plumber recently. That plumber is now being attacked by the media for putting a spotlight on what Obama wants to do to all of you."
democrats wants a socialists and nationalist type of policy, ya know national socialist, lets just say nazi for short
If they recognize how grave the threat is they will.
Wimps. It should be the “C” word.
Communism doesnt fail, it just runs out of other peoples money to give away.
America can’t afford Obama’s socialistic tax and spend redistibutionist policies. “Spreading the wealth is around” is not what made this country great. Hard work and ambition, the drive to succeed without undue interference from the government, is what made this country successful.
Wow.
Gee.
24 YEARS of democrat-socialist lies about their programs - and it is only now - with two weeks keft in the nation’s life - that McCain SAYS it.
I don’t understand why McCain waited so long to call Obama’s tax/welfare schemes what they were. He should have been doing this since day one.
Bet your a@@ he’s a s@cialist.
Communism KEEPS all the money and gives you an allowance....it failed because there was never any incentive.
The main problem with McCain is that he has no clue about fiscal conservatism (other than cutting spending) or American free market capitalism. That is why he cannot see this stuff for what it is.
I would use Socialist/Communist/Marxist/Islamic Terrorist in describing Obama. After all, his mentors and pals were exactly that!
RE: “They have a chance to destroy Obama’s career. Will they take it?”
******
Not sure if McCain-Palin will do it themselves; but it’s up to the rest of us to finish the job. We have just over two weeks..................... and plenty of “ammunition.”
RE: “They need a commercial that uses the S-word.”
*********
I recommend using Marxist/Communist instead. Socialism doesn’t sound nasty enough to scare enough people back to reality, and “socialism” is just a tad removed from the real deal anyway — Communism.
They need a commercial that points out the fact that once a socialist government runs short of tax revenue they will start confiscating the retirement funds of the middle class.
dumocrats, never thought they were that smart.
Yeah, well....WE can say that, Sarah Palin cannot...she’d be crucified in the press
Since I usually post only on abortion, I will let my ignorance show a bit on this post. I have a question on taxes that I wonder if anyone will have an answer to, since you people on here seem to be pretty well educated on these matters. Why do we tax peoples income? I mean, doesn’t that just punish those who work hard and reward those who don’t? Why don’t we instead go to a national sales (consumption) tax? That would seem to me to do a couple things. 1. If necessaties (food, clothing, 1st home, 1st vehicle) were exempt, it would truly be the most fair tax wouldn’t it? Those who could afford to spend the most, pay the most tax, and the poor, who could only afford neccessities, would pay none. 2. It would capture all tax currently eluded by both the rich, through tax writeoffs and loopholes and income like prostitution, drug running, and under the table income. 3. It would create incentive to become rich as well as to save money instead of “spend to get a deduction”. 4. It would force congress and government officials to make policies that would help keep the economy strong because they could no longer raise taxes on a discriminate group of earners. Their revenue would directly correlate to how people consumed, and since we are an economy based on consumption, that would be a fairer way to tax. I personaly would like to see NO tax at all either way, but then again I am of a libertarian mind, so that is why I am asking for imput here. Thank you for your replies on this! You guys/gals are the best!
Is this payback time for McCain?

I’ve only seen a few ads so far and wondered if this is the reason.
......Why do we tax peoples income.....
It is easy. You just tell employers to withhold and the have to. The employer becomes the tax collector and the payer never knows he had the money.
Democracy is indispensable to socialism. The goal of socialism is communism. -V.I. Lenin
The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism .-Karl Marx
We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.~Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
"How do you tell a Socialist:- It's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an Anti-Socialist someone who understands Marx and Lenin" -Ronald Reagan
That would seem to be How, not why? Why is this not a discussion among americans? Is there a flaw somewhere that I don’t see in this idea? That is what I am trying to understand :)
As a bitter conservatve McCain basher you indicate your misunderstanding of the campaign process. The object is to win.
You don’t eliminate you ammunition and not be able to fend off a counter attack. Late in the campaign is the time to unleash your guns when the time for counter attack is very limited.
Because if he had done so all along the MSM through their endless chatter would have all the sheeple convinced that socialism isn't so bad.
McCain is a believe in "surge" tactics. He saves stuff up till it's time to "surge" thru the finish line.
THere’s no reason to tax anyone’s paycheck. It’s unjustified. They do it because we let them get away with it.
I heard Palin yesterday say something to the effect of “..and that sounds a little bit like socialism...”
Haven’t heard McCain get that close to the bullseye...
Maybe this is the plan, good-cop, bad-cop. Or maybe it’s just McCains “officer and gentleman” approach that seems to keep him from saying it in “straight talk”.
Probably being told by his handlers that it will alienate the Independents...
That is a FANTASTIC cartoon!
Says all anyone needs to know.
Let me restate it. The income tax based on employer withholding is easy. Ease of collection is the reason
That I got, however, states collect sales tax from merchants. Wouldn’t a national sales tax be the same thing? I mean, what would be the difference. In florida, we pay a 6.5% state sales tax collected at the point of purchase. Wouldn’t be just as easy to put a say 10% national tax as well and then collect the same way the state does its sales tax?
Yes. The flat tax pushed by Neal Bortz does exactly that.
Cue the litle kid who yells "that's racist"!
In your opinion, is the flat tax a better way to go? Why or why not? And thank you for your reply.
ping to the expert.
Forget the “S” word.
Use the “M” word. the “T” word, the “S” word, and the “C” word.
They’re more appropriate.

The problem with a national sales tax is that sooner or later someone will want to make it progressive. To do that, they will need to know who you are everytime you want to buy something so they can figure YOUR tax rate based on how rich you are. Then the government starts tracking everything you do.
Progressive means that wealthier people are taxed at a higher RATE. For a sales tax to be progressive, they will figure your tax rate based on some kind of measure of your wealth. Most likely, it will be calculated on your social security withholdings. (You didn’t think they would stop SS withholdings from your paycheck just because they stopped income tax with holdings did you?)
To be sure that you are taxed at the proper RATE when you make a purchase, you will need some kind of ID to make a purchase. Every purchase will be recorded and tracked by uncle sam.
You aren’t describing HR 25 in your post. See:

Between the ‘S’-word, the ‘H’-word, the ‘C’-word, the ‘L’-word and the ‘N’-word (and more to come, I’m sure), pretty soon our alphabet will be useless.
