McCain-Palin use the 'S' word
CNN ^ | 10/18/08 | Steve Brusk

Posted on 10/18/2008 11:12:53 AM PDT by pissant

CONCORD, North Carolina (CNN) – John McCain stepped up his rhetoric against Barack Obama on taxes in his weekly radio address, comparing his plan to socialist programs that would “convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth.”

The remarks were part of a theme McCain has used since the final presidential debate that criticizes Obama’s philosophy, but his most recent comments were the first time he directly invoked the word 'socialist.'

His running mate, Sarah Palin, has used the word in speeches the last two days as well.

In the pre-taped radio address, McCain said, “At least in Europe, the socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives. They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Senator Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut it's just another government giveaway.”

McCain did not repeat the wording in his appearance at a rally in Concord, North Carolina Saturday morning, where the latest CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll shows the two candidates tied at 49 percent.

Outside of Michael Moore’s Cuban Utopia (sarc/off), has anyone ever seen a Socialist country where they would want to live permanently? The standard of living must be LOWERED before everyone can be “equal” in a Socialist country.

They should put forth the word socialist by saying,

"Obama is a socialist, meaning that he wants to take money from you and redistribute to somebody else somewhere else. That is socialism. Socialists like to call it 'spreading the wealth', and that is exactly what Obama did talking to a plumber recently. That plumber is now being attacked by the media for putting a spotlight on what Obama wants to do to all of you."

America can’t afford Obama’s socialistic tax and spend redistibutionist policies. “Spreading the wealth is around” is not what made this country great. Hard work and ambition, the drive to succeed without undue interference from the government, is what made this country successful.

McCain is not the brightest tool in the shed. He should have been doing this from day one and he should have been telling everyone that this same socialism with Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Community Reinvestment Act is what caused the current financial meltdown. He should also dump all of his socialist rhetoric about buying people's mortgages and all the other garbage that he is talking about.

The main problem with McCain is that he has no clue about fiscal conservatism (other than cutting spending) or American free market capitalism. That is why he cannot see this stuff for what it is.

I recommend using Marxist/Communist instead. Socialism doesn’t sound nasty enough to scare enough people back to reality, and “socialism” is just a tad removed from the real deal anyway — Communism.

Since I usually post only on abortion, I will let my ignorance show a bit on this post. I have a question on taxes that I wonder if anyone will have an answer to, since you people on here seem to be pretty well educated on these matters. Why do we tax peoples income? I mean, doesn’t that just punish those who work hard and reward those who don’t? Why don’t we instead go to a national sales (consumption) tax? That would seem to me to do a couple things. 1. If necessaties (food, clothing, 1st home, 1st vehicle) were exempt, it would truly be the most fair tax wouldn’t it? Those who could afford to spend the most, pay the most tax, and the poor, who could only afford neccessities, would pay none. 2. It would capture all tax currently eluded by both the rich, through tax writeoffs and loopholes and income like prostitution, drug running, and under the table income. 3. It would create incentive to become rich as well as to save money instead of “spend to get a deduction”. 4. It would force congress and government officials to make policies that would help keep the economy strong because they could no longer raise taxes on a discriminate group of earners. Their revenue would directly correlate to how people consumed, and since we are an economy based on consumption, that would be a fairer way to tax. I personaly would like to see NO tax at all either way, but then again I am of a libertarian mind, so that is why I am asking for imput here. Thank you for your replies on this! You guys/gals are the best!

It is easy. You just tell employers to withhold and the have to. The employer becomes the tax collector and the payer never knows he had the money.

As a bitter conservatve McCain basher you indicate your misunderstanding of the campaign process. The object is to win.

You don’t eliminate you ammunition and not be able to fend off a counter attack. Late in the campaign is the time to unleash your guns when the time for counter attack is very limited.

Haven’t heard McCain get that close to the bullseye...

That I got, however, states collect sales tax from merchants. Wouldn’t a national sales tax be the same thing? I mean, what would be the difference. In florida, we pay a 6.5% state sales tax collected at the point of purchase. Wouldn’t be just as easy to put a say 10% national tax as well and then collect the same way the state does its sales tax?

THere’s no reason to tax anyone’s paycheck. It’s unjustified. They do it because we let them get away with it.

That is slowly changing due to growing grassroots support for The Fair Tax Act(HR25/S1025). It will replace federal income taxes with a national sales tax and abolish the IRS ending the increasingly socialistic and oppressive tax system we have today. Fair Tax ping!

The problem with a national sales tax is that sooner or later someone will want to make it progressive. To do that, they will need to know who you are everytime you want to buy something so they can figure YOUR tax rate based on how rich you are. Then the government starts tracking everything you do.

The problem with a national sales tax is that sooner or later someone will want to make it progressive.

The Fair Tax will be intrinsically progressive. People who earn more will pay more tax since those who make more tend to spend more.

To do that, they will need to know who you are everytime you want to buy something so they can figure YOUR tax rate based on how rich you are.

You're describing the structure of an income tax. There will be no need to know how much an individual earns as a consumption tax will automatically be paid at the point of sale based on the rate that will already be determined regardless of wealth.

Progressive means that wealthier people are taxed at a higher RATE. For a sales tax to be progressive, they will figure your tax rate based on some kind of measure of your wealth. Most likely, it will be calculated on your social security withholdings. (You didn’t think they would stop SS withholdings from your paycheck just because they stopped income tax with holdings did you?)

To be sure that you are taxed at the proper RATE when you make a purchase, you will need some kind of ID to make a purchase. Every purchase will be recorded and tracked by uncle sam.
