CIA’s Loss of Top Spies ‘Catastrophic,’ Says Agency Veteran
CQ ^ | 10/19/08 | By Jeff Stein, CQ Staff

Posted on 10/18/2008 5:53:28 PM PDT by Flavius

Only a few months ago, Sam Faddis was running a CIA unit charged with preventing terrorists from getting nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.

Today, only 50, the equivalent of a full colonel at the top of his game, he has quit.

Scores more like him, Faddis says, spies with years of working the back alleys of the world, have walked away from the CIA’s Operations Directorate at the top of their careers, at a time when the agency needs their skills the most.

The directorate is losing “25 or 30 chiefs of station” — the top CIA representative in a country or major city — “or their equivalent” at headquarters, every six months, Faddis estimates.

That’s out of an estimated thousand or fewer case officers — the men and women who recruit and manage spies — worldwide.

“The effect in any time in history would be serious,” Faddis says, “but at this time, when you’re trying to rebuild the agency from the cutbacks of the Clinton years, massively trying to catch up, at a time when you really need your most experienced people to run operations and mentor the new blood coming in, it’s catastrophic.”

I sure wouldn’t want to be a CIA employee in a distant, hostile place, knowing that my life and the lives of everyone I had recruited in that place was soon very possibly going to be in the hands of an administration run by Barak Obama.

You can best believe I’d be heading for the exit.

If he thinks Clinton was bad, wait until he gets a load of what the Muslim street thug from Chicago does, not only to the CIA but to the military as well.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with concerns over who might be the next president.

The Obama administration would gut the agency just like Buba did anyway. Might as well get out now. Same with the military. No officers want Obamation as their CIC. Retire and go fishing.

Imagine the enemy moles Hussein will install at CIA, FBI, and the military.

Thugs, dictators, terrorists, commies, and Marxists around the world will be forever installed in the US gov in two weeks time.

It’s a bad combination - our best and brightest are off fishing while the thugs of the world smell weakness...Yeah, it’s gonna be fun.

A veteran from the Army told my son today to join the Coast Guard instead of the other services in order to not directly serve under Hussein.

Is the Coast Guard a more distant service from the Pres, than the rest?

Can anyone educate me?

Thanks!

What about the Coast Guard? See my question at post 12.

Thanks!

Well, shoot. If it's that important, guess I could come out of retirement for a while. I'm a pretty quick study, so it won't be too long before I'm up to speed.

Hope my beer drinking, and tippling a little scotch or rum from time to time won't be a problem. James Bond did pretty well, even with the tippling he did.

As far as salary, well that could be pretty easy, since as a retiree my accounts are in fairly good shape (except for that IRS/401K hit we all took recently). Lets say $25 - $30 K, (monthly) negotiable of course, plus expenses, stuff like that.

$450K per year and I'm your man in Cairo or Madrid or Berlin, whatever. Call me, ok?

Did I mention that I have arthritis, am recovering from back surgery, and (ahem) servicing the hot young female agents from opposing powers is going to have to be left to a younger agent?

Who’s to say exactly what the reasons are why they are all leaving? Some may be coincidental for other reasons. Happens all the time.

Anyways, the ones who are doing it fearing a Barack win, would easily be able to come back within 6 months or shorter if McCain wins.

I went beyond the excerpt and read the article at CQ. I’m not familiar with CQ. They have a link to an article by David Corn on the sidebar: “McCain’s New Joe the Plumber Ad: A Cynical Act of Class Warfare.” If they take the very left-wing David Corn seriously, then perhaps I should wonder about CQ, and this article.

Certainly the Coast Guard plays a vital role in that it performs sea rescue, monitors shipping traffic and performs many roles that don’t involve political decisions of war and peace.

"What about the Coast Guard? See my question at post 12."

I don't know. You would have to ask a current or former Coast Guard person that. I only know that they are not deployed overseas. They do very dangerous work protecting the U.S. coast, ports, oil platforms, smuggling prevention and rescues. Otherwise, it is my understanding that they are not sent into foreign combat.

I believe (not for a fact mind) that under an Obama dicatatorship, a navy person would have their ship docked and decommissioned and thus be put asgore. Air Force personnel would be grounded, planes won't fly and thus no longer needed [de-funded]. Army & Marines (with all the special forces included) is another story. The military people here could better answer all that.

I believe there are elements of the USCG in the Persian Gulf. They are assigned to port security.
