Unsettled electorate keeps Senate race in play (Cornyn leads in polls; Noriega thinks he can upset)

The same thing that gives Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn headaches in his re-election campaign gives Democratic challenger Rick Noriega hope of an upset — an unsettled electorate that makes voter turnout hard to predict.

The first-term senator wouldn't have anything to worry about in an ordinary election. A Democrat hasn't won a Senate race in Texas in 20 years or carried the state in a presidential contest in 30 years. Cornyn has led in the polls and enjoyed a fundraising advantage of almost 5-1 over Noriega.

Nevertheless, the polls have never shown Cornyn with a lock on re-election and indicate he has less support than Republican presidential candidate John McCain among Texas voters.

Combine that with Democratic excitement for presidential nominee Barack Obama and voter anger over the economy, gasoline prices and the Iraq war, and Noriega believes he has a shot at an upset.

"People are just so distrustful and disenchanted with those in authority who have gotten this government in a ditch that they want a viable and credible alternative, and we've done our best to present that to the people of Texas," Noriega said.

Economy big worry Cornyn said he is not expecting the "Obama tsunami" that some predicted after the record voter turnout in the March Texas Democratic presidential primary between Obama and U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Cornyn acknowledged the economy is causing voter concerns, though.

"The economy is clearly causing people some anxiety and is going to be reflected in how they vote on Nov. 4," Cornyn said.

A re-election victory could put Cornyn on the path to becoming a major national Republican leader.

Even though he's a freshman senator, Cornyn, 56, was elected by the Senate Republican Conference as its fifth-ranking Republican.

OK, so we’ve checked on the status of Hussein and Noriega’s races, but how are the Democrats faring with candidates Stalin, Hitler, and Mao?

Can anyone explain, aside from the MSM working overtime on propaganda about the election, how voter dissatisfaction is always against Republicans, but never against RATS?

The Drive-By Media is just giving themselves away with BS like this. I know Houston and Austin will vote ghetto but to claim the Rat is even close is disingenuous.

Biden is California telling folks the campaign is not over.

McCain quietly opened 71 offices there 3 or 4 weeks ago.

0bama’s ‘spread the wealth’ plan has caused folks to wake from their trance and look it for first time.

Sarah Palin demonstrates guts and class by walking into the den of Loonie Lefties in SNL. She smiles and jokes to show the Leftists what she is made of. They can mock her to her faced, but she WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

Catholic Priest are reporting that people are ‘fibbing’ to the pollsters to avoid be called racist.

The polls are all over the place!

ACORN is about to explode and take a range of dems down with it.

We can still win this!!

I hope you're right but I fear nothing will be done before the election to insure b/hussein "wins". Afterwards, it will be swept under the carpet and the socialism re-education begins.

Dear God, have mercy on America.
