Prices shouldn't be set by supply and demand. They should be determined by, well, what prices "should" be. That's the innovative theory Maggie Rodriguez propounded on today's Early Show.
The Early Show anchor's unique take on economics came in the course of a segment on the falling price of gasoline. Rodriguez lamented to co-anchor Chris Wragge that grocery prices weren't falling along with gas prices. In Maggie's view, grocers who set prices based on demand rather than on what prices "should" be are the culprits.

Darn those laws of supply and demand ping to Today show list.
Udder stupidity.
That means somebody must set them. Who is smart enough for that? Oh, yes. President Obama. /sarc
GMTA. Concluding sentence from NB article:
“I’d suggest Rodriguez immediately contact Barack Obama and propose that his administration establish a new department. Call it the “Bureau for the Pricing of Goods Based on What They Should be Priced On.” Perhaps Maggie would agree to serve as its first Commissar!”
Aha! In an Obama administration do we see a new cabinet..
Department of PAISB (Pricing As It Should Be)
Which reminds me of nothing so much as Saul Alinsky and Michelle Obama telling us to not accept the world as it is but to fight for the world as it should be...
ahhh Mondays..
I speak with friends and relatives every day who blather on about this person being overpaid and that product or service being overpriced.
If it costs too much, don't buy it or use less of it!
But no. These economic imbeciles pull into the nearest gas station, even though there's one a block away with a lower price--then complain. Then they happily pay $35 a gallon for Starbuck's coffee.
The only relevant check on run-away capitalism is consumers seeking the best values in products and services. All the government regulation in the world won't protect us from our ignorant and undisciplined neighbors. Not only do they pay the higher price, but they bid up prices for the rest of us.
My father was pieceworker in a NYC sweatshop and he provided a secure home for his family by watching his pennies, nickels and dimes. He taught me this lesson when I was barely old enough to speak: "Any idiot can pay top dollar for everything.
I move that the price of a plasma 60” TV be $100. Anyone second the motion?
Well then, what ever Ms. Rodriguez gets paid, it “should be “ a bunch less” for such silliness!
LOL! If memory serves, one of the hallmarks of the USSR was a centrally planned economy. We remember how that worked out for them...
Puhleeze....... 60 bucks, ... not a penny more! ;0)
If so, honey, I think you probably owe your employer some.
Hey ! maybe we will get a “Ministry of Silly Walks” also!
:-D
In my nearly three years of study of the 'journalism' profession, I have come to a couple of conclusions. First, I think sports reporters are those who are too damn dumb to be regular general interest reporters.
Second, business reporters are identified as having that skill set whenever j-schools' senior classes are interviewed for jobs. The interviewer ask for a show of hands of those who can reconcile their checkbook. Any who can are immediately assigned to the business desk when they go to work.
I think the salaries for media anchors should be $1.50 per hour.
And that’s overpaying.
Coming up next on CBS, the Robert Mugabe Show.
Maggie wants to “spread the wealth around.”
Think about it.
LOL! Yes! That's the answer -- STOP buying groceries! Get rid of that demand! If you don't cooperate, we'll have to line you up and shoot you!
