The GOP never wanted to destroy the Dem party, and the Dems will never completely destroy the GOP. They need each other, otherwise the remaining party would soon split with no boogeyman to scare everyoen back onto the plantation every four years.

I think you're spot on. That's why I said that both parties will fight a 3rd party gaining power. They have a sweet deal going on. Sometimes the Republicans win, sometimes the Democrats win, but at the end of each year, they are both still there, pretty much as strong as ever. No one gets hurt — except that part of the country outside the Beltway.
