Barack Obama, clarifying Joe Biden's statement that he will face an international crisis if elected, says his running mate "sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes."
The next administration will face international challenges regardless of who is elected president, Barack Obama said Wednesday, rebutting criticism of Joe Biden's statement over the weekend that the Democratic candidate will face a "generated crisis" if elected.
Obama said the key reason the next president will face such threats is because of the damaging policies of the past eight years, and he said he's confident his administration will meet such a test.
"Whoever is the next president is going to have to deal with a whole host of challenges internationally and ... a period of transition in a new administration is always one in which we have to be vigilant," Obama said in Richmond, Va., where he met with a panel of foreign policy and military luminaries.
"We have to be careful. We have to be mindful that as we pass the baton in this democracy that others don't take advantage of it -- that is true, whether it's myself or Senator McCain, it's been true throughout history."
Obama said such challenges would not be unique to an Obama administration, and he tried to re-articulate Biden's statement, suggesting his running mate did not express his point as tactfully as the campaign would have liked.
"I think that Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes," Obama said.
Biden made the comments over the weekend to two fundraising audiences, saying he expects that Obama will face an international challenge early in his presidency if he is elected on Nov. 4.

But...but, what about all of those other polls showing Obama up by 10+ points. What about Pelosi and others planning the victory party and saying it was 100% over and the ObaMahdi had already won the Presidency? [/dripping sarcasm]
Not everything that happens or will happen is due to the “damaging policy of the last eight years.” I’m sick of hearing this pack of lies. Everything bad that happens in an Obama administration will not be Bush’s fault.
“I think that Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes,”
Oh.. Ok lets forget about it then.
Yes, but will both candidates make the wrong decision, as also predicted by Nostradumass? I don’t think so!
It took “the one” 2 days to think up an excuse for Bidens’ security leak. So basically, when the 3AM call comes, BO will say “I’ll get back to you in a couple of days. I’m too busy too respond”
How does Senator Soreto reconcile Biden’s claim that the base must stand firmly behind Obama as he makes some “unpopular” decisions that HAVE to be made?
Nice try 0bama. The ragheads already know what McCain will do if they start anything so they are not likely to test him.
My cynical meter is pegging upwards.
Democrats almost always project their intentions. A “generated crisis?” What are the democrats planning?
Not only would everything in a hypothetical 0bama administration by Bush’s fault,
any opinions to the contrary, or anything critical of 0bama, would be violently quashed.
Obama is full of it. Our enemies see Obama as an easy mark. But they are scared sh**less of McCain. They won’t try a thing with McCain at the helm.
Exactly, we need to move on.. thats just Joe. He is a silly ole man.

You know the best thing Bush could do for us now is endorse Obama.
Bush: “With all the socializing I’ve been doing over the last month I’ve come to think the best man to follow in my footsteps would Barry Obama.”
That would be sweeeeet! lol
Doesn’t seem to know the difference between a challenge & a crisis.
So Biden meant both candidates when he specifically mentioned a “young 47 YO”?
Draft anyone?
48 hours later and this is the best he can do? America’s enemies are licking their chops.
