Its not unusual for guys to buddy-up and join the army together, but how about a mother-and-daughter duo instead? Thats what one Fremont family is doing. Lisa Altoon, 39, and her daughter Megan, 17, have both enlisted in the army together.
Its an opportunity for me to go back to school, says Altoon. I didnt finish getting my degree I started going back to school kind of late in life after a divorce so I can [now] finish my education. KCBS Mike Colgan reports
Altoon says it all started as a joke when her daughter decided to enlist in the army. A few months ago, both mother and daughter met with a recruiter at Altoons ex-husbands home. During the meeting, Altoons ex-husband joked that she too should enlist as she continued to drill the recruiter with numerous questions. However the recruiter seized the opportunity and told Altoon that age 39 she was not too old to join the army.
From that moment on, I kept really thinking about all the pros and cons, really thinking seriously about it, and then I came back to [the recruiter] and said, You know what? I want to enlist.
Daughter Megan says that its cool, and at the same time a little weird to have your mom serving in the army with you.
I know how my mom is, shes very athletic, so she likes this type of stuff. Its just sort of weird to have my mom with me, but then again itll give us more time to spend with each other.
The pair are scheduled to undergo nine weeks of grueling basic training together in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. They will both be trained as I.T. Specialists and will be assigned to a command center in Mountain View.
Im really proud of what Megan and I are doing together, says Altoon.
Oh man I’d hate to go through basic at 39. Or OCS or ROTC field training, but especially through basic. Shoot a lot of folks retire at 39, with 20 years of service!

Jeez. I went through at 19 and it still nearly killed me.
She’s a better man than I am, Gunga Din.
