INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AFP) – Barack Obama on Thursday quit the White House trail for Hawaii and an emotional reunion with his gravely ill 85-year-old grandmother, 12 days before the US presidential election.
Madelyn Dunham, who raised the 47-year-old Obama for much of his childhood, is his sole remaining link with his tight-knit family after his mother died of cancer more than a decade ago.
The Democratic nominee's compassionate leave comes with Republican John McCain searching for a sudden lurch in momentum and new polls showing Obama well positioned in the vital battleground states set to decide the November 4 election.
Obama told CBS television that he decided to make the exhausting journey half-way across the Pacific to see Dunham -- nicknamed "Toot" -- despite the crush of campaign events as he "got there too late" when his mother Ann Dunham died.
"We knew that she wasn't doing well but, you know, the diagnosis was such where we thought we had a little more time and we didn't. And so I want to make sure that I don't -- I don't make the same mistake twice," Obama said.
"My grandmother's the last one left. She has really been the rock of the family, the foundation of the family. Whatever strength, discipline that I have, it comes from her."
Dunham is reportedly suffering from a broken hip and generally failing health.

Aria - SO TRUE!!! While Obamarama was in Hawaii on vaycay, he visited G’ma for a few hours - but NO MICHELLE and kiddies! Don’t they know/like G’ma or is she too blanco for Michelle? How sad that the woman who raised him isn’t visited by her great-grand children - no one brings THIS up in the MSM but we know ALL about Sarah Palin’s wardrobe - Stand by for PRAVDA USA!!!
Good point but I think this is a ploy for hands off Obama for two days. Watch McCain state how sad this is and we’ll be off Obama for two days so Bmabi gets a free pass and McCain momentum is stalled. Mark my words...

It is crass to have to speculate about such a thing, but I for one believe nothing at this late stage of a campaign happens benignly.
Point 1- Grandma gravely ill, Obama announces he is going to suspend his campaign and visit 4 DAYS LATER
Point 2- At the same time as this announcment, media propaganists begin a 3 day pounding of the Sarah Palin 150K clothing story.
Point 3- Obama does some sob story interviews with DBM about why he’s going to see grandma. Interviews occur in close proximity to appearance on Ellen where he dances around like urkel.
Conclusion: Obama internal polling shows they are having trouble with women and/or elderly. Grandma story is designed to “soften” his image for that demo. Power hungry marxists don’t stop campaigns for matters of the heart. It just doesn’t happen in that character type.
Kids were there, Michelle wasn’t.
I have thought the exact same thing. We first heard about her "grave" illness on Monday and that Obama was going to put his campaign on hold, but that didn't happen. She must not be too gravely ill.

Maybe he's not even going to Hawaii. Maybe he's doing something REALLY sinister, like meeting privately with some comunist leader to cause some upheaval during election day. (Should I be a novelist?--just kidding)

If, as Ed Hale posited yesterday, BHO is not actually the son of BHO, Sr., but rather actually the son of Frank Marshall Davis........who he actually LOOKS LIKE, then Gramma Toot IS his only living relative. Because, although born in Kenya, with (supposed) Gramma Sara and others in attendance, he is NOT related to ANY of THEM; because he’s actually a Davis and not an Obama.
He is still NOT eleigible to be POTUS, because he is not a Natural Born Citizen; but he’s not an Obama, he’s a Davis. (Talk about WHITE trash!)
