The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported October 23 that Democratic Congressman Jack Murtha is in a statistical dead heat with Republican challenger William Russell, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel who decided to run against Murtha after the congressman made disparaging remarks about Marines serving in Iraq.
According to the report, Murtha holds a lead of just over 4 percentage points, which is within the polling margin of error for the poll cited by the Tribune-Review. The poll was taken immediately after Murtha's latest controversial remark about constituents in his district, so the poll may change again after the effect of Murtha's comments wears off a bit.
After referring to some of his constituents as racists, the Tribune-Review says "...Murtha later said many in Western Pennsylvania were ‘rednecks' several years ago." As would be expected, Republican challenger Russell saw an opportunity to gain some ground in the polls. The Tribune-Review says "About 54 percent of voters among those polled say it's time for someone else to represent them in Congress. About 35 percent say Murtha deserves to be re-elected."

Russell has raised more money than Murtha, the Tribune-Review says, but Murtha currently has more cash on hand. Federal election commission reports show Murtha with nearly $600,000 and Russell with just over $300,000.

Thanks for donating to Russell, Carolyn. He’s a good and honest man that will do more for all the people of the district whereas Murtha has been corrupt for many years and I personally believe you are right.

To be honest I don’t know. It’s been over a week that I read something about him doing well, maybe IR is up on him.
Well, Irey, bless her heart, lost by 20 percentage points. I would not exactly say she wore the old fart down. But, my question is: What affect will this have on the Presidential race in Murtha’s district.
Anyone have a clue?
Hopefully, this will have coattails for McCain in PA.
There’s another poll out there showing Murtha down at 35 percent and Russell up at 48 percent.
The same poll gives McCain a 48-39 edge over Obama in the district.
The problem in PA is the Philadelphia area which goes D every time.
I was glad to do so. I sent money to him and to Michelle Bachmann. I started donating directly rather than through the Republican congressional committee when they stuck it to a good candidate here in Arizona in 2006 because of his stand on immigration vs their open border guy he had defeated. I feel better knowing the money is going to go to a good candidate, personally I would like to see everyone donate direct and send a strong message to the party.
I sent Michelle Bachmann $100 yesterday and she is the Rep. of a district 2 states away). I just loved that she told those liberal socialists off on MSNBC AND called them anti-American! LOOOOOVED IT!
Barletta, running in PA-11 against Dem Rep. Paul Kanjorski, still seems to have a slight lead in a district where Bush got 47%. But Kanjorski is a long-serving (11 or 12 terms, I think) Congresscritter. He’s got a 5:1 money advantage down the stretch, and I don’t think he’ll go quietly. It’s not a shoo-in by any means.

Murtha's district went for Gore 55 to 44 percent in 2000, and Kerry by 51 to 49 percent in 2004. If it is trending Republican it could well go for McCain this time around.
