'W' Tanks At Box Office

There's been tremdous interest by the public in the box office fate of Oliver Stone's W. for its second weekend in release. Well, it ran out of steam. QED International/Lionsgate's Bush biopic sank 58% to No. 8 with $1.5 million Friday from 2,050 dates for what will probably be a $5.2M weekend. The $30M negative cost film should end up with $23M domestic box office gross by the end of its North American run. That means, with a $25M P&A investment and Lionsgate's distribution fees, the film won't recoup.

I heard today that Oliver Stone is asking the US government to bail him out.

I would tell him to have Michael Moore give him some of his earnings from Farenhype 911.

After “alexander” bombed he made the crowd-pleasing “patriotic” 9/11 movie. Maybe the studios will make him do something more palatable to people’s taste to cover his tab.

For all intensive purposes he has.

For all intents and purposes, he has.

Oliver Stone has something in common with quite a few Freepers these days. He was misled by his own political bias. Everybody hates Bush, as far as Stone knows, and everybody cares enormously about Bush’s many crimes and how he has disgraced the US in the eyes of the world.

Meanwhile in the ticket lines at the AMC and the Edwards and the Mann it turns out that folks would rather see something else this weekend. They don’t live in Oliver Stone’s world, which is an awful lot smaller than he thinks it is. And he’s not the only fool who doesn’t know he’s living in an echo chamber.

Looks like it did not recoup it's production costs [yet]. I do plan on buying the DVD.

The rule of thumb in 'the business' is that break-even comes at three times production costs. So, AC is about 53 million below break-even at the moment. Hopefully it'll sell lots of DVD's, because there's virtually no foreign market for it.

I have a feeling ‘American Carol’ will do well on the DVD market.

I think your right, but I think W will too. I think Americans don't go to movies as much as they used to. It is actually annoying to go now a days. I went to see Eagle Eye and it was fairly packed (which most of these type of movies do well) and the guy two seats over was chomping his popcorn pretty loudly. What do you do? Tell him to stop eating the popcorn...it is just annoying!!!

Some trolls want to see him vanish but in reality we should kiss the ground he walks on. He gave us our National Security back and without that we have nothing.

Maybe they mean people like me that wanted to see it fail. Cue the Ha Ha guy.

That's what I was thinking. People who were interested in the fate of the film, not its content.

I saved every ad for W and then stuffed a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope from Planned Parenthood asking for a donation. LOL!

How did an American Carol do?

American Carol presents caricatures of Michael Moore and various other people, and makes it clear that the caricatures are real jerks. It does not, however, do a particularly good job of establishing that the caricatures have any relation to reality. Those who are familiar with Michael Moore will observe that many of Michael Malone's more obnoxious qualities in fact derive from the real Mr. Moore. On the other hand, those who would view Mr. Moore more charitably will simply regard Michael Malone's character a disrespectful spoof.

While I believe that An American Carol is probably more accurate than many of the "stupid W" things that have appeared over the years, in terms of form or substance it's really no different.

I just saw "W" with my wife - my daughter works at a theater and gets us in gratis - I would not pay for it.

I found it to be a caricature of the players in the White House. Maybe I'm dense, but I could not figure out why the used music "Robin Hood" for some of the scenes. It seemed more fitting for an Obama movie (take from rich, give to poor).

It also points out that if Colin Powell was so much against the war (supposed lack of evidence regarding WMD), he should have had the stones, brains, and professionalism to resign rather than to have made the presentation at the UN.

Overall, a stupid movie where I wasted time I will never get back. The popcorn was good.

I would liked to see Trace Adkins in “An American Carol” but it isn’t playing around here.

As for “W” it’s easy for me to understand why it wouldn’t have been popular in the area where we live. President Bush was here in Alexandria, LA this week and my daughter was one of the schoolchildren chosen to meet him. I somehow doubt that on the heels of such an honor, I would have taken her to the movies to see a picture which doesn’t sound particularly flattering to Bush.

Who wpuld watch “W”? Anyone who likes him would not pay to see him disrespected, and anyone who hates him might watch a 3-minute skit on SNL, but wouldn’t subject themselves to a full-length movie on a caricature of Bush.
