I stopped surfing Politico a long time ago. No truth there. No reason to go there anymore.

In other words, Smith has accepted a transparently absurd statement by an intensely interested Obama supporter responding to a dangerous charge just before an election, while rejecting not only logic, but written evidence contemporaneous with the events in question. Who would expect better of him?

The Politico started out as centrist, but incompetent, partisan hacks such as Ben Smith make it basically The Nation without admitting as such.

Politico is often the source or rumor as news that turns out to be unattributable to any real source. Its purpose is to get buzzwords and lies into the media echo chamber - to give the journalists some source to cite when they want to make baseless accusations and hope they “catch fire” for a few days/news cycles to everyone realizes no one has a clue or ever had one.
