Republican civil war breaks out behind John McCain

John McCain's attempt to galvanise his party by choosing Sarah Palin as a running-mate has resulted in a dysfunctional campaign

Even in the midst of a final bombardment in the battle for the White House the sound of gunfire can be heard coming from behind Republican lines, presaging a protracted and bitter civil war.

A party that only four years ago appeared so disciplined and dominant as it delivered President Bush a second term is now divided in the face of an anticipated rout that may give Democrats unfettered power across Washington.

Mr Bush's legacy — unfinished wars, a tainted reputation for competence, record high spending, a global economic crisis and the effective nationalisation of the financial system — have shaken loose the ideological cement that once bound the Republican party together.

This has left national security realists at odds with “neocon” hawks over Iraq, fiscal conservatives railing against the bailout of Wall Street, and the Religious right — “theo-cons” — skirmishing with the party leadership over what it regards as a too-timid approach on issues such as abortion, civil partnerships and illegal immigration.

Such fractures in the coalition, apparent in a primary campaign which John McCain won despite securing significantly less than half the vote, have become infected with gangrene during the presidential election.

I am not sure election would be a rout.

For all I can see, the election will be close, and McCain has a shot for upset victory. Even London Times is decidedly pro-establishment in D.C.

It has been always the establishment which wreck the party, not grassroots in the past 8 years.

Some people are just suicidally stupid, even though they think they are smart.

Peggy Noonan, Kathleen Parker (who?), and a bunch of has-beens and never-weres does not a civil war make.

The real story of this election is the actual civil war going on soto voce between the Obots and the PUMAs.

This is the latest in agitprop nonsense. McCain is closing the gap and the Obamanoids are throwing out this crap by the bushel. About 50 MSM whores have already run stories with this angle.

Delete it and move on.

Just another “media” guy suffering from a severe case of Palin Derangement Syndrome.

I agree! And just where are these stories in the mainstream media? A real story goes unreported but a made up story gets repeated over and over again.

So-called conservative Brits like Obama because they are sure that Obama will dive into full-bailout mode, and put U.S. government squarely behind salvaging financial system at any cost.

With McCain, the chances are less certain. GOP grassroots are against it, and McCain may fall short of full bailout requirement.

As you know, if financial system fails, Britain is a toast. They depend on U.S. bailout policy more than U.S. citizens.

Too bad McShamnesty spent so much time trying to appeal to the middle rather than support the conservative base. The party will remain divided unless and until it returns to it’s conservative roots and gets back to endorsing/electing those who’s first and only allegiance is to conservatism.

Since when did “reaching across the isle” to land somewhere in the middle become something to brag about? How long before “reaching across the isle” includes a middle compromise on RvW with the acceptance of abortions in some circumstances? How long before “reaching across the isle” includes appointing SCOTUS’s willing to do the same?

Agreed. What civil war? Heck, we’re all trying to drag McCain across the finish line, and he’s kicking and screaming every step of the way.

The campaign has been dysfunctional in spite of Sarah Palin. She is the only chance they have.

OK, UK press!

How about a little CONTEST!!!!!!!!"????!

Pit the Establishment vs. the Grassroots.

Tell each one to try to get as many of their supporters to the polls on next Tuesday for John McCain.

Challenge both sides. Declare a "friendly" state of war between both GOP camps. I am serious.

A little "inter-service rivalry".

ESTABLISHMENT: "Hey, Grassroots! I got your GOTV right here! 50 bucks says you guys are worth a fart in a windstorm. WE in the Establishment can get out twice as many GOP to the polls as you redneck slobs!"

GRASSROOTS: "Yer mother wears army boots. OK, smart alecks. You walk the walk but can you talk the talk?! Challenge accepted! You buttoned-down, know-it-all jerks!"

And then battle it out. We can get a pollster to see which side won, and then we can have the real battle from November 5th, BUT NOT BEFORE--which is what the enemy wants (before) with these types of planted "divide and conquer" articles.

OK, lets go at it!

If Caribou Barbie can field dress a moose all alone, she’s strong enough to heave him all the way to 1600.

I will be very surprised if she doesn’t.

I’ve been praying for divine intervention several times a day for weeks now.

I know thousands of others are doing it too.

1. This is like so yesterday.

It's an abandoned and discredited attempt by the MSM to influence the election.

If by some chance, 0 does win, we'll have to all stop kidding ourselves. All this "alternative" energy garbage is a load of crap. 0 is going to need oil and lots of it to get America moving again. Guess who is going to have it? She's not going to be a one termer.
