This is old news but I haven't seen it discussed here so I was curious if anyone else reached a similar conclusion or recalled the facts as I do.
During the primary debates, the topic of immigration came up in nearly every democrat and Republican debate. And in my view, immigration was in fact one of the more hotly debated topics during the primaries.
Fast forward to the three presidential debates and the vice presidnential debate. NOT ONE QUESTION WAS ASKED ABOUT IMMIGRATION. How can this be? Of course the conclusion that I draw is that the liberal moderators recognized that this is a losing issue for their candidate since Obama supports driver's licences and social security for illegals. Even my elderly parents, who are liberals, see red when this issue is raised by the democrats. In any event, it is apparent to me that, even though the economy was jutifiably a dominant theme, there is no excuse for this topic to not be broached at least once during FOUR debates after it was such a dominant topic during the primary debates.
A second issue that I believe was conciously avoided for the very same reason is crime. Even many democrats would oppose Obama's intention to eliminate minimum sentencing standards. Clearly a winning issue for McCain which is why I suspect it was completely ignored during the debates.
While in my view the responsiblilty lies primarily with the liberal moderators, McCain lost a big opportunity on both of these issues when he did not bring up these issues during the debates and force Obama to respond to them. I know that some will claim that he was not given the opportunity. I disagree. I think it was incumbent upon him to find a way to talk about winning issues. Since I live in Maryland, I am not seeing or hearing any of McCain's ads. I only hope he is using at least some of ad dollars to address these issues in competitive states.
They also dodged the abortion issue. And they dodged the gay marriage issue.
These are areas where Obama would either have to duck, or risk damaging his standing either with the fanatical moonbats or uninformed voters who aren’t aware of how extreme he is. McCain managed to work it in, but Obama escaped it.
I think primarily that it's because there were other issues that were seen to be more immediate and pressing -- the economy, for one thing; and foreign policy (Iran, Russia and Pahkeestaahhhn).
Immigration just isn't on anybody's radar right now.
I hear where you’re coming from. I just think that given how it was covered so thoroughly and repeatedly during the primaries, it has to be evidence of bias that it did not come up even once during four debates.
