Gay couples fearing the passage of Proposition 8 next week are filling up county clerks' schedules with marriage ceremonies to say "I do" before the electorate possibly says they can't.

An estimated 17,000 same-sex couples will have married in California by the time Tuesday's vote takes place, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA law school.

Yes on 8 supporters said they had unsuccessfully tried to have the Supreme Court delay same-sex marriages until after the election.
"To the extent that there is a quandary or dilemma is the court's own making," said Chip White, press secretary for Yes on 8.

Michelle Callejas, left, and Tara Garrett, partners for 11 years who wed Wednesday at the Sacramento County clerk/recorder's office, felt they had to marry while they could. "It's something we wanted to do, but with Prop. 8 we definitely felt the pressure," Garrett said.
Even if Prop 8 passes I still anticipate that same-sex marriage will be the law of the land nationwide within 10 to 20 years at most. Things simply seem to be trending that way.

I really, really don’t get it. The women, at least from a distance, appear to be reasonably attrative. Maybe not beauty queens, but, scheesh.
You’re right — it’s gotta be in their souls or lack there of.

Gag!....Are their little hearts all a-twitter?....
I wonder if after Yes on 8 passes next week if the calls will come to just let them stay married - after all they already are and like illegal aliens, they are already here so we might as well live with it.
The Supreme Court should have stayed implementation of their directive until AFTER the vote in November. Doing so would have resulted in no prejudice, no harm and no foul. If 8 passed, then their decision was moot; if it didn’t pass, then the marriages could have gone forward - it isn’t as though any legitimate children were going to be born OUT of wedlock, or anything along those lines.
But they didn’t. So now there is the question of the actual legality of those marriages. Since I am voting for Prop 8, I haven’t scanned it to see if it makes provision for marriages already performed. Anyone know? Because I’m afraid this is going to be the loophole people are going to jump through to keep gay marriage legal in California.
Gay guys can tie knots in it?
Who knew?
No truer sign that it's election season in America!
Doesn’t matter what happens - you gay couples will always remain an oddity to heterosexuals in general & object of private humor to most.
"Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California."
Spoken like a newbie with an agenda!!!!!!! Things must be slow at DU
You seem to be under the impression that speculating on the likelihood of something happening is the same as approving of it.
You seem to be under the impression that speculation of BS, isn’t BS.
That is precisely why the stay wasn’t granted. They wanted 17,000 legal ‘marriages’ to make things messy. If it were anyrhing else, they would have waited for the election, but the Lavender Mafia lobby is rich and powerful.
This really shouldn't be that hard to understand...
