Politics is a tightwalk of dealmaking and the balancing donor’s interests with those of the people. It is very rare for a politician to stay on the right path - and especially rare for one to survive for a long time without leaning with the pressure.
Calvin Coolidge said it best, IMO. He said the legislators are in Washington where there is lots of money just laying around and it doesn't seem to belong to anybody so why not spend it.
