McCain advisor Charles Fried defects to Obama (was Solicitor General under Reagan)
Harvard Law School Record ^ | 10/30/08 Section: Election 2008 | Chris Szabla

Professor Charles Fried, an advisor to John McCain's presidential campaign, has announced that he can no longer support the McCain/Palin ticket. In a letter to the general counsel to the McCain/Palin campaign, he cited McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate as too dangerous "at a time of deep national crisis", and has asked for his name to be removed from several campaign committees on which he has served. Fried also publicly stated that he had voted for Obama via absentee ballot.

Fried later clarified to The New Republic that he had voted for Obama because he no longer supported the McCain ticket, and did not consider abstention "a proper option".

Fried has been an influential voice in American conservatism and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as Solicitor General in 1985. During his years serving with the Reagan administration, he represented the White House in over 25 cases before the Supreme Court. Fried was later an associate justice on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. In the last decade, he has vocally supported George W. Bush's appointments of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

With the exception of the above interruptions, Fried has taught at HLS, where he is known as an important theorist of contract law, since 1961. He has published extensively on a wide variety of topics, and is particularly known for his support of Kantian ethics.

He has joined a long line of Republicans, many of whom served in Republican presidential administrations, who have recently endorsed the Democratic candidate. These include former general and Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Massachusetts Governor William Weld '70, former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson, and former George W. Bush press secretary Scott McClellan.

There are plenty of times when I think Michael Savage is loopy, but I have to say maybe he was on to something here when he talked about the sleeper agents in the McCain campaign that were deliberately giving him bad advice.

This has got to be pure unadulterated sexism. They think a socialist (girlie) man with no experience running anything at all is better than a woman who has run a company, a city and a state.

If someone has any theories other than blatant sexism for these Noonan, Buckley, Fried defections, I'd like to hear it.

Sounds like a sleeper troll!

Now the former campaign advisor? I'll bet this is the schmuck who was giving out the negative info leaks to the press.

You're concerned about Governor Palin's lack of experience and you are going to the Obama camp??

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

And Mr. Fried joins the growing number of intellectuoids who’ve come to the conclusion that “community organizing” trumps running an actual state when it comes to providing preparation for the top executive position in the country.

Not news: Posted on another FR thread days ago. This is discuused in-depth over at the Volokh Conspiracy where some of the posters were his students. Controversy surrounds the issue of how long he has not really been a conservative.

So to keep from electing a VP with no foreign policy experience, he votes for a President with no foreign policy experience, and who has friends who hate America and American interests at home and abroad?

What an idiot.

It’s Christianity and abortion and eugenics, that’s behind much of this. They cannot stomach Palin because she’s too common but underneath that lies her naive Christian faith that prompts her to bring a Down Syndrome child into the world and dare to think that common sense can go a long way in providing real leadership in times of crisis.

It’s best to let these elitist snobs run. I only wish McCain had the guts to tell them to go to you know where when they beg to be readmitted after he wins. But you know he’ll smile and pat them on the back and say, “welcome back, my good and faithful servants.”

anyone who sites Palin’s experience as the reason has simply bought into the media narrative and has no idea what they are talking about. If he wanted to meet her and have a sit down with her to feel more comfortable that would have been arranged (No one has sat down with her and not been impressed). The one ones who choose not to are wolves in sheeps clothing who are more likely than not RINOs

he cited McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate as too dangerous "at a time of deep national crisis",

So you vote for the socialist with no, make that "no", experience whatsoever.

No, there is something else going on. He's a balanced-budget socialist, a pro-choice country-club guy; maybe he was a Cold War hawk in his younger days but those days are long gone. Or maybe the Obama camp has some polaroids he doesn't want posted on the internet.

Principled conservative? Not a chance.

I look forward the post-election blood-letting. Time to banish the Bushies and other pseudo-cons back to the clubhouse.
