Texas was solidly Democratic not too long ago. John Tower (1966) was the first GOP Senator since Reconstruction, as I recall. It wasn’t until the 80s that Republicans took over.

John Tower was first elected in 1961 in a special election to fill LBJs seat when he became VP.

Texas went Democratic in 60 (stolen), 64, 68 (Wallace took votes from Nixon). Nixon carried the state overwhelmingly in 72. Carter, I believe, carried the state in 76. Reagan turned TX red in 80 and it’s been solidly red since.

Actually John Tower was elected in 1961 in a special election to replace LBJ who assumed the office of VP after the 1960 election.

Also the Democrats of that era were for the most part old time Conservative Southern Democrats although we had a significant minority of Libs. (predominatly minorities, union types and “intellectuals”).
