Iraqi ambassador talks about life under Saddam

The Iraqi ambassador to the United Nations told a University of South Dakota audience Wednesday Oct. 22 that he came to tell the story that most Americans don’t hear about his homeland.

“I believe the American people have the right to hear what is going on in Iraq from an Iraqi perspective. You don’t hear it much,” Ambassador T. Hamid Al-Bayati told a packed room of about 200 in the Al Neuharth Media Center.

Al-Bayati spent time as a prisoner of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime. Saddam hired two people to kill Al-Bayati, who led Iraqi opposition in London from 1992-2003 until returning to Iraq that year.

“I knew opposition members who lost 30, 40 and 50 family members. I lost eight family members,” the ambassador said.

Saddam’s regime repressed women, tortured innocent people and invaded Kuwait for no reason, Al-Bayati said. The Iraqis tried to overthrow the regime but

were unsuccessful, he said, adding that 500,000 Iraqis were killed and the revolt crushed.

“We needed the support of the United States,” he said. “The Iraqi people never forget what you (Americans) did to get rid of Saddam’s regime and bring democracy.”

Since the fall of Saddam’s regime, the Iraqis have adopted a permanent constitution, elected a government that includes women, and have taken their place in the United Nations, he said.

It CAN’T BE! Barry told me the war was a mistake! You mean it was a good idea all along? Wasn’t the Clinton admin in agreement that there needed to be a regime change and Saddam actually had WMD’s?

Iraq is a mute issue during this campaign because of such a successful outcome. The Iraqi people have thanked America and President Bush for their freedom. I’m happy Iraqi officials are telling the left how wonderful life without Saddamn is.

There was a time, in my lifetime, when the story of IRAQ would have been lips of historians and journalists, educators and politicians , books would have been written, movies made and the classrooms filled with invited guests who fought the war and lived to tell the story of the miracle that is Iraq.

Sadly that time NO LONGER exists and if not for a FEW people like the Iraqi ambassador our nation would be SILENT!

He sounds positive. They have a 70 billion dollar surplus. Ah, maybe the US should be getting some cheap gas.
